This litter of puppies came with their mama, Rainbow, from another rescue. We aren't really sure what dad was--possibly a Lab or a Lab mix. They are curious, playful, sweet, and love to give kisses. We think they would fit well into almost any household.

Foster Update 10/31/13:
• Appearance  all black and weigh about 9-10 pounds
• Energy Level Moderate – they sleep well at night and then play vigorously in the morning.  They nap frequently and then play hard after they wake up.
• Food I feed them four times a day, mostly dry (Puppy Chow) with some wet mixed in.
• Adaptability They love all people and adapt well
• Behaviors They do like to chew and need to be supervised.  They are easily corrected when they are chewing on something they shouldn’t.
• Human Social Skills Friendly with all people and there are very loving.
• Animal Social Skills Great with my other two dogs
• Obedience Not yet but they know when I say NO!
• Training (Is your foster dog housetrained or crate trained?)  They sleep in the crate and go outside to pee and poop.  They don’t have accidents in the crate
• Personality Quirks They are sweet and loving and trainable
• Ideal Home They love children and love to run around and play outside.

Foster Update 10/10/13: We love having them and they have become so well adjusted to living in our home environment. They are about 70-80% house trained. Never and accidents in the crate (they let us know) and as soon as you take them out, they do their duty. :)  They are seldom in the crate more than 1-2 hours and these days get a lot of free roam. They follow me around, respond when I call them, utterly adorable and lovable. They stay with us on the sofa in the evenings when we relax and I must say we are guilty of bringing Ferris to our bed when he gets up midnight and starts whining. He loves to cuddle up next to us and gives us thank you kisses.

Ferris is a very sweet dog, gives us a lot of loving eye contact and likes a lot of physical affection and closeness. These dogs deserve a very loving home as their permanent home.  I keep a regular schedule for them to keep them well stimulated, well-fed, trained and rested. They will make a great pet.

According to www.dogbreedinfo.com, the first traces of a dog similar to the Basenji are found in Egyptian tombs and wall drawings of five thousand years ago. Also called the Congo Dog, it was brought to Europe in 1934. English breeders refined it and exported it all over the world. In Africa, it is used as a guide in the forests, to warn against the approach of dangerous animals, and as a very active pack-hunting dog of small game. The Basenji is alert, affectionate, demanding, energetic and curious. It loves to play and makes a good pet, as long as it is handled regularly from an early age. It is very intelligent, responds well to training with a strong desire to please. They can be reserved with strangers. The Basenji is somewhat aloof, but can also form strong bonds with people. It should not be trusted with non-canine pets. They are usually patient, but do best with older considerate children. The Basenji dislike wet weather. They like to chew, so giving them lots of toys of their own would be a good idea. The breed likes to climb and can easily get over chain wire fences. Basenji are very clever at getting their own way, they succeed less by obstinacy than by charm. It has the unique properties of not barking (it makes a low, liquid ululation instead) and of cleaning itself like a cat. It can be described as speedy, frisky, tireless at play and teasing the owner into play. Their strong desire to play can lead to behavior problems if left alone. Most Basenji problems usually involve a mismatch between owner and pet. The owners mistake the adjective "quiet' to mean inactive instead of noiseless; thus, they become harassed by an active, though relatively silent , dog. They have a life expectancy of 10-12 years.
