This litter of puppies came with their mama, Rainbow, from another rescue. We aren't really sure what dad was--possibly a Lab or a Lab mix. They are curious, playful, sweet, and love to give kisses. We think they would fit well into almost any household.

Foster Update 8/26/14:

• Appearance Nestor is black, about 55 pounds, and almost 3 feet tall.

• Energy Level He has a medium energy level. He is happy to run around in the yard and play/wrestle with my dog, but he is also content to lay at your feet or on your lap.

• Food Nester gobbles up his food and is not picky!

• Adaptability He is very curious around new people and loves to give them kisses. He also loves to jump up on people, which we are working with him on.

• Behaviors We have been working on Nester's separation anxiety, and he can now remain loose in the house alone with my dog for up to an hour.

• Human Social Skills he adores new people and just wants to give them love!

• Animal Social Skills Nestor is very laid-back around new animals and loves to play with them.

• Obedience He is learning to sit and wait by his food until I release him to eat it.

• Training  Nestor is fully crate trained and he stays in his crate while we are at work. He seems to be content there and just sleeps.

• Personality Quirks Nestor is a licker! He just loves to give kisses, and he really thinks he's pleasing you if he gives you his paw!

• Ideal Home  Nestor would do well in a home where his pack leaders are eager to take him on walks and exercise him daily. I believe he would do well in a family with children, however I have never had any kids in the house with him.

Foster Update 8/12/14:
Nester sure is a cute boy! I have not yet seen him with other dogs except for my own, but he gets along well with my dog who is his same height/weight. He loves to wrestle and play rough, but he can also be very mellow and relaxed.

Nester has some separation anxiety, so it is imperative that he is crated when his owner is not home. I have faith that he will get over this, and we are working on leaving him alone for short periods of time, outside the crate, to help him get used to it. He is house trained, although he did have one accident his first day, I attribute this to nervousness.

He loves walks and playing outside, so a fenced yard would be a real plus. He is very sweet and loves to give kisses! We are working basic commands of sit/stay. I think he is a fast learner and will pick them up soon.

Foster Update 10/23: We call him Chubs for obvious reasons. He's a chunky monkey and he is an awesome pup.  He has alot of energy but is considerably more mellow than his sister.  I am in the process of trying to crate train him and he is starting to get the idea although he still has pee pee accidents if left in his crate for more than a couple/few hours.  He loves attention and is very affectionate but doesn't overwhelm you with the need.  He likes to play with his plushy toy and with chew toys. He has a really good time running around and playing with his sister and also our dog Tobe.  He is very mellow and affectionate with our children as well.

According to www.dogbreedinfo.com, the first traces of a dog similar to the Basenji are found in Egyptian tombs and wall drawings of five thousand years ago. Also called the Congo Dog, it was brought to Europe in 1934. English breeders refined it and exported it all over the world. In Africa, it is used as a guide in the forests, to warn against the approach of dangerous animals, and as a very active pack-hunting dog of small game. The Basenji is alert, affectionate, demanding, energetic and curious. It loves to play and makes a good pet, as long as it is handled regularly from an early age. It is very intelligent, responds well to training with a strong desire to please. They can be reserved with strangers. The Basenji is somewhat aloof, but can also form strong bonds with people. It should not be trusted with non-canine pets. They are usually patient, but do best with older considerate children. The Basenji dislike wet weather. They like to chew, so giving them lots of toys of their own would be a good idea. The breed likes to climb and can easily get over chain wire fences. Basenji are very clever at getting their own way, they succeed less by obstinacy than by charm. It has the unique properties of not barking (it makes a low, liquid ululation instead) and of cleaning itself like a cat. It can be described as speedy, frisky, tireless at play and teasing the owner into play. Their strong desire to play can lead to behavior problems if left alone. Most Basenji problems usually involve a mismatch between owner and pet. The owners mistake the adjective "quiet' to mean inactive instead of noiseless; thus, they become harassed by an active, though relatively silent , dog. They have a life expectancy of 10-12 years.
