Deputy is a lovely Australian Shephard mix.  We also think he's part Boxer because of his square face!  Deputy and his best friend in the whole wide world, Sheriff, came to us compliments of the Orlando Police Department. Late one night Judy received a phone call from Officer Rogers, telling her about two dogs in the "homeless" area. One of them was three-legged and chained up, the other was roaming free. Judy, who didn't have anything to else to do at 10:35pm, agreed to meet the officer. They had no problem with the chained dog (immediately dubbed "Sheriff"). As soon as she was freed, she happily hopped in the car and went to sleep.  Deputy, however, gave the officers a run for their money... literally!  After an hour of chasing, they admitted defeat and Judy took Sheriff home alone.  But not one to admit defeat, Officer Rogers went back at the end of his shift, and who comes trotting up to him like they're best buddies?  Yup, Deputy!  So, 2:30am Officer Rogers is on Judy's doorstep with a grin of triumph on his face, Deputy by his side! Ta Dah!  And we've had him ever since.  You can imagine that these two needed a bit of cleaning up, but what a joy they are!  Sweet and affectionate, loving people and caring for each other.  Sheriff has found his forever home but sweet Deputy is still waiting patiently.

Here are some highlights about our wonderful Deputy, from his caretakers:
•  Seems to also respond to the name “Buddy”
•  Very intelligent, happy, sweet and loving dog
•  Will wave his paw in the air to greet you when you come home!
•  SINGS along with you when you start a quiet dog-like howling!!  VERY cute!
•  Very well behaved and described as having “perfect” house manners, no crate needed!
•  Does have some arthritis which causes him to limp slightly but does not seem to bother him
•  Takes glucosamine and Novox daily to help with his joints
•  Loves other dogs and loves to wrestle around in play
•  Very quiet and does not bark excessively but will bark to alert you that someone is at the door
•  Does not drool, has been described as a very “clean” dog!
•  LOVES playing fetch outside with his people, and will drop the ball in your lap when he brings it back!
•  Loves chew bones and can spend hours on one!
•  Does not beg while you are eating your food and will “Back Up” when told if he’s too close
•  Prefers to be inside the house with his people, but enjoys taking short walks outside
•  Completely housetrained and very scheduled
•  Prefers to sleep on his own bed on the floor rather than in your bed
•  Not socialized with cats
•  Listens to voice commands very well and easily trainable

According to www.dogbreedinfo.com, despite the misleading name, the Australian Shepherd is not Australian at all, but was developed entirely in the U.S. to work as a herding dog on ranches. It is possible that the name was derived from one of the dog's ancestors. The breed's principal forebears were most likely Spanish dogs that accompanied the Basque shepherds and herds of fine Merino sheep exported to both America and Australia in the early days of the colonies. At some point it probably crossed with Collie stock. It has only recently gained recognition as a distinct breed. Its many talents include, retrieving, herding, watchdogging, guarding, police work, narcotics detection, search & rescue, agility, competitive obedience and performing tricks. Australian Shepherds are easy going, perpetual puppies that love to play. Courageous, loyal and affectionate, they are excellent children's companions that are great with active children. A devoted friend and guardian, for they are naturally protective. Very lively, agile and attentive - they are eager to please, with a sixth sense about what the owner wants. Australian Shepherds are highly intelligent and easy to train. Though aggressive when at work with livestock, the Aussie is gentle with human friends. Australian Shepherds needs lots of exercise and a job to do, as the breed is very intelligent, active and easily bored. They can become nervous and destructive if left alone too much without exercise. They are naturally suspicious of strangers, so they should be well socialized as puppies. Working lines of Australian Shepherds may be too energetic to be suitable pets. Some like to nip people's heals in an attempt to herd them. They are quiet workers, unlike some breeds, which are bred to bark constantly at livestock. This breed is not usually dog aggressive.
