Description:

Cream and her buddy, Butter, came to us from a shelter which had a tragic fire! We took as many dogs as we could handle and there are all now looking for forever homes! These darling are friendly and playful won't you give them a forever home?

Cream was described by her former rescue as very friendly, comical and playful.  Since Cream got to us, she has been exhausted and a little wary, but we're starting to see those characteristics come out!

Foster update 6/14: Cream is a wonderful dog!! she loves to be cuddled and be pet!
She is slow to warm up to new people but after a couple of minutes she is ready to be your best friend!  She is good with dogs, cats, and i suspsect older kids! She is mostly houstrained and travels well!I love this little girl!

6/10 Volunteer update: CREAM was very easy going at the LkMary PetSmart event this past SAT.  She was a bit wary of new people at first, but after a few minutes, she was quite at home sitting in volunteers' laps being petted...she likes her ears rubbed~CREAM barked while in the crate, wanting to join the crowd; once out of her crate, she played with the bigger Labs, Hounds and Bulldog puppy. She knows how to sit/beg and it is the cutest thing to see her up on her hind legs.  We did work on taking treats gently as she lunges for them (not aggressively) and we wanted to correct that in case little hands would be feeding her. Saying "wait" with closed fist in front of her, CREAM soon learned she had to take the treat gently once offered again. She is feisty and has a fun personality. She was shy with the people milling around the store and did not approach many, but with some she barked and bounced in circles as if showiing off.   After seeing her cuddle in our laps, we think she just needs a little time to warm up to folks.  CREAM enjoyed walks around the store and is not a puller on the leash; she responds well to commands and seems to have had some manners training. CREAM has the most adorable "one ear up, one ear down" thing going on too!

Foster Update 6/23/11: Cream is a cutie.  She has short fawn colored hair.  She looks more Chihuahua than Dachshund and difinitely has the Chihuahua mentality, she barks at everything.  After telling her to stop it takes about 3 more barks and then she stops.

Her energy level is high for periods of time and then she relaxes again.  She loves to wrestle with my other small dogs and actually races around the house with one of them.  I believe she would do better in a house with another dog.

I am feeding her 1 cup of a Natural Balance/Purina One mixture (all dry) once a day.  She eats most of it, she takes several pieces from her bowl and takes them about 2 feet away, drops them on the floor and eats them from there.

She does have separation anxiety, she cries very loudly when I leave in the morning or when I walk Opie outside.  I'm not sure for how long she cries when I leave, but when I walk Opie outside she cries the whole time.  Her crying is very loud as our neighbors next door say they can hear her occassionally.  She does not chew or destroy stuff during this time just the crying.  For this reason I feel an apartment might not be the right place for her, especially if she is going to be left for long periods of time.

She has a fear of men, my husband and I are working on this, but she still will not come to him even if he has a treat.  She will sit with him if I give her to him, but as soon as she can she will get away from him.

According to www.dogbreedinfo.com, the Chihuahua is the oldest breed on the American continent and the smallest breed in the world. Native to Mexico, nonetheless it seems to have been introduced by the Chinese. It was only brought to Europe at the end of the nineteenth century. The Chihuahua is named after the Mexican state of Chihuahua where he was brought to the rest of the world by travelers. This breed is believed to have been sacred to the Pre-Columbian Indian nations. The Chihuahua is a popular, economical companion dog. Courageous, extremely lively, proud and enterprising, it gives and demands affection. Bold and saucy, it moves swiftly to avoid being stepped on. Chihuahua's are strong-willed, intensely loyal and become very attached to their owners, even to the point of jealousy. They like to lick their owner's faces. It is undeniably suspicious of people except for its owner. When strangers are present, it follows its owner's every move, keeping as close as possible. This breed may snap at teasing children, after all it is too tiny to get away. The Chihuahua must resort to his sharp teeth in self defense. It is not recommended for children. He can be noisy and may require patience to housebreak. Many owners simply paper train this breed. The Chihuahua hates the cold and may shiver, although this may be due to high metabolism as much as temperature or anxiety. It will tolerate and even appreciate a warm sweater on cooler days. They are good little dogs for apartment life. Although it is tempting to carry these dainty creatures about, they will keep fitter if taken for walks. A body harness is safer than a collar. Don't think that just because he is small he should be confined to a small space. Chihuahuas have a life expectancy of 15 or more years.
