Lost and Found Pets
We are frequently contacted by people who have lost or found a pet and don't know what to do. Here are a few suggestions:
If you have lost a pet:
~ Walk your neighborhood, knocking on doors, handing out and posting flyers. Don't neglect talking to the kids, mailmen and other service people in the area. They are probably the ones outside the most and have the greatest chance of spotting you pet.
~ If the pet exited a window, leave it open. It may return. Also, put out some food - hungry pets follow their stomachs and noses home.
~ Take out a classified ad with the Orlando Sentinel. Include a description and the area in which the pet was lost. Call 800-669-5757 or complete online at orlandosentinel.com.
~ Take out a free classified ad at www.petfinder.com. Again, include description and area.
~ Contact Animal Control a couple of times a week, preferably in person. They are very busy and may not remember to contact you if a pet of that description is taken in. If picked up by a stranger, your pet may be taken to the animal shelter they are most familiar with, not the one nearest you, so contact several shelters. Seminole County: Seminole 407-665-5201 SPCA 407-323-8685 Orange County Orange 407-254-9140, www.ocNetPets.com SPCA 407-351-7722 Volusia County Volusia 386-740-5241 Deltona 386-860-7177 Edgewater 386-424-2456 Halifax Humane Society 386-274-4703 SE Humane Society 3886-428-9860 Lake County 352-343-9688
~ Set up a Breed Alert: register on our website, select Breed Alert as an option within My Rescue Options, then, within My Rescue Home, select the breeds most likely designated by a shelter if they find your pet. After this, you will automatically receive e-mails whenever we or an affiliate post a pet of that breed(s) on the web.
~ Make up flyers with photos, post in your neighborhood and bring to area vet offices.
If you have found a pet:
~ If you are not taking the pet into your home, place a collar on it with a note asking the owner to contact you. It may not be lost but just a pet that is allowed to roam.
~ Take out a free Found ad in both the Orlando Sentinal and on www.petfinder.com as detailed above. Do not give a detailed description, just size, color and area it was found. You must leave enough unsaid that you will be able to tell if you are really talking to the pet's owner.
~ Have the pet scanned for a microchip by a vet. This is usually a free service.
~ Notify local animal control. They will not insist that you bring in the pet - they have enough going on!
~ Notify local vet offices. You'd be amazed at how often they recognize a pet!
~ If you are unable to find the pet's owner and cannot keep the pet yourself, contact a rescue. If it is a purebred, you may want to contact a breed-specific rescue. If you can keep the pet until adopted, we will most likely be able to post it on our website.
Remember, microchip your pets!!! Judy rescued 100 dogs after hurricane Katrina. Only five found their original owners, and that was because they were microchipped! And always, always, spay and neuter your pets!!!
