Harvey was rescued from a local animal shelter where he had been for awhile.  He is a young, playful puppy at heart. Will you be his furever family?

Foster Update 8/21/14:

Energy Level - playful, enjoys walks, car rides, chasing a ball and laying near someone

Food - eats 1/4 cup of Taste of the Wild dog food twice a day and several treats.  He takes treats gently and can catch them.  He waits his turn when taking treats with my dogs.

• Adaptability - quickly adjusted to our home and other dogs - confident

Behaviors – confident and very friendly, no aggression.  He rarely barks.  Occasionally, he’ll get really excited playing with our dog and barks once or twice in excitement.  He likes to chase toys and carry them around.  He has not destroyed (chewed) anything at our home.

Human Social Skills – very social - loves people and was comfortable with our family the first day.  Harvey greets new people playfully.  He enjoys being a lap dog or lying beside me while I’m working on the computer.  He is very gentle and seems to expect to be treated well.  We have seen no signs of neglect or abuse. He wants attention and to be loved.  He gets excited when he sees me in the morning.

Animal Social Skills – enjoys following our dogs around the yard and puppy wrestles with our 2 year old dog.  He was comfortable with other dogs at the dog park.  He seems very happy and comfortable when he meets new dogs.  I don’t think he’s ever had a bad experience with another dog.

Obedience – knows “Sit” and “Come”.  We’re working on “Wait” at the door.   He walks well on a leash (no pulling).  He seems to want to please.

Training - house broken.  We crated him the first night and he cried a lot.  We don’t crate him because he sleeps well through the night, has had no “accidents”, gets along well with our dogs and does not destroy things in our home.

Ideal Home - Harvey would enjoy a home with a person that wants a loving companion.  He would enjoy having a home with another playful dog but wouldn’t mind being an only dog if he gets attention from his person or family.  He would enjoy a fenced yard to play in and someone who would throw him a ball or toy to chase.  He enjoys walks, car rides and the dog park.  I think Harvey would be a great family dog because he’s so friendly and he seems to prefer being near a person when he’s not playing.  He is not “nippy” so I think he would do well with children.

According to www.dogbreedinfo.com, the Chihuahua is the oldest breed on the American continent and the smallest breed in the world. Native to Mexico, nonetheless it seems to have been introduced by the Chinese. It was only brought to Europe at the end of the nineteenth century. The Chihuahua is named after the Mexican state of Chihuahua where he was brought to the rest of the world by travelers. This breed is believed to have been sacred to the Pre-Columbian Indian nations. The Chihuahua is a popular, economical companion dog. Courageous, extremely lively, proud and enterprising, it gives and demands affection. Bold and saucy, it moves swiftly to avoid being stepped on. Chihuahua's are strong-willed, intensely loyal and become very attached to their owners, even to the point of jealousy. They like to lick their owner's faces. It is undeniably suspicious of people except for its owner. When strangers are present, it follows its owner's every move, keeping as close as possible. This breed may snap at teasing children, after all it is too tiny to get away. The Chihuahua must resort to his sharp teeth in self defense. It is not recommended for children. He can be noisy and may require patience to housebreak. Many owners simply paper train this breed. The Chihuahua hates the cold and may shiver, although this may be due to high metabolism as much as temperature or anxiety. It will tolerate and even appreciate a warm sweater on cooler days. They are good little dogs for apartment life. Although it is tempting to carry these dainty creatures about, they will keep fitter if taken for walks. A body harness is safer than a collar. Don't think that just because he is small he should be confined to a small space. Chihuahuas have a life expectancy of 15 or more years.
