Cookie is a sweet Pointer Mix who was surrendered along with her 13 babies. She was found by her owner several years ago as a stray and they did not get her spayed...we are sad to see this now unwanted family end up in a shelter even if we know we can find a great home for her.

Foster Update 10/5/14:
How had Cookie not been adopted yet?! She is the easiest foster dog we have ever had, and we've had MANY! She is 100% house trained, walks great on the leash, sleeps peacefully through the night, does not need to be crated when your away, and adjusts fairly quickly with new dogs. She initially took a few days to show her playful side around us but we assumed that was because she was fearful of the new environment. After a few days she opened up and has shown her fun-loving personality to us. She would be great in a family with children of any age. She seems to like attention of people rather than affection from another animal. If she is going to be homed with another dog she will need to be fed separately due to some small signs of food aggression. If you are looking for a sweet and fully trained dog then look no further because she is an exceptional pup!

Update:

Cookie is a really great dog, and she was a wonderful mommy to her 13 puppies, who have all been adopted. After she weaned the puppies, her body filled out and Cookie is truly beautiful~!

She is a Pointer breed and these are hunting  dogs. She loves to hunt for squirrels in the back yard all day. She has really cool flecks of white hairs throughout her black coat and lots of black freckles on her white coat.

She eats her food well, but doesn't really care for treats, she would smell them and walk away.

Cookie is housebroken, and she walks well on a leash.

Cookie would love a home with a fenced yard. She did dig under the fence a couple of times to chase a squirrel she saw in the neighbors yard. New owners should be aware of her keen hunting nose and watch that she does not dig out to get to something that smeels good!

She does bark at other dogs when at the vets. She plays well with other dogs, but at times could be territorial inside the house with another dog. Cookie would be happiest as the only dog in the home and with an owner who will continue to socialize her with other dogs.

She is really a great dog who needs a loving forever adult home . We would prefer to see her with no small children that regularly visit as she is easily startled.

Like many dogs in the South, Cookie is heartworm positive but don't let that stop you from adopting a great dog. We are treating her with monthly heartworm preventative, our preferred method. Many heartworm positive dogs go on to lead long and healthy lives.

PRBJtreats ALL of our dogs with monthly Heartworm preventative. HW+ dogs are treated with the recommended slow method, using monthly HW preventative as it is gentler on the animal’s system than the more invasive, injection method. Most dogs that are Heartworm positive can lead healthy, normal lives if the disease is caught early and treatment began. There are different options to treat HW and new owners may choose to redirect their type of treatment with direction of their vet.All HW+ dogs have a HW slow treatment info sheet in their adoption folder which will be provided to new owners.

According to www.dogbreedinfo.com, the Pointer, also known as the English Pointer, was developed two centuries ago by crossing among the Italian Pointer, the Foxhound, the Bloodhound, the Greyhound, the Newfoundland, the Setter, and the Bulldog. This is an almost unbelievable mix, but it certainly has produced an outstanding result. The modern Pointer has existed for about eighty years. The Pointer is named for the motionless stance the dog assumes once he has found game. The direction of the point tells the hunter where the game is hiding. The first recorded mentions of the Pointer in England date from around 1650, when the Pointer was used to find hare for the Greyhound to hunt. By the early 1700's the Pointer became the dog of choice. The Pointer is renowned for his scenting prowess. He works very quickly, covering a lot of ground. The Pointer is particularly good on upland birds, but adapts well to other game. The breed has excellent endurance in warm weather, but is not suited to very cold conditions. Working best on land he is not very comfortable in water. He has a legendary tracking and pointing skills, but is not usually expected to retrieve game. A competitive dog, the Pointer still dominates Pointing Field Trials over all other pointing breeds. Today, the Pointer is a family hunting dog and companion. The English Pointer is full of energy and go-power. Loyal and devoted he is a true friend. Kind and patient with children, he is a dashing gentleman. The Pointer is affectionate, intelligent and clean. An energetic and enthusiastic hunter, yet calm at home. Wise and adaptable to every situation. Socialize well at an early age to combat a tendency for timidity. Some can be high-strung. They tend to be a bit willful, distractible and reserved with strangers. It will bark at suspicious noises, but it is not a watchdog. Show lines tend to produce better pets. Field lines are often too active and hunt-oriented to make good pets. Hunting instincts develop early. Puppies, even at eight weeks old, often display pointing behavior. These fairly independent dogs are generally good with other pets and are not usually dog-aggressive. This dog is extremely energetic and tireless. It is very important that it gets daily vigorous exercise to prevent extreme indoor restlessness. This breed is more than a match for even the most active family and they should not be taken on as a family pet unless they can guarantee plenty of vigorous exercise. They need to be taken on a daily, brisk, long walk, jog or run alongside you when you bicycle. They are excellent jogging companions and love to swim and retrieve. They have a life expectancy of about 13-14 years.
