About Sunni the Summer Camp Graduate Pup

  • Microchipped: Yes
  • Housetrained: No

Update: - Sunni is one lucky pup!  He attended Camp Doglando for two weeks.  He learned loose leash walking, sit, stay, down and many other things!  This is the third year that dogs from PRBJ have gone to Camp Doglando and you will be amazed at how much they learn in a short period of time!

You can check out the University of Doglando blog and see photos from the camp from the following link:

This puppy was brought to us with their mother and her sister as well as her puppies.

Sunni is a beautiful JRT puppy whom was adopted as a little puppy. This sweet little Jack Russell/Catahoula mix was recently returned due to barking in the crate while the family is away. Sunni is well socilized and happy. He loves to play and cuddle.  He has been through the beginning petsmart training class.  Sunni has a LOT of energy and needs a home where he can get at least 45-60 minutes of exercise every day!

He has been doing well at our  home. He plays with our 5 dogs all day. He loves to play tug with our dog Beauty with anything he can hold in his mouth. He appears well socialized. He plays with our grandson who is visiting. He usually has something in his mouth such as  sticks ,pinecones ,cloth and anything he can find. He will usually chew on it . He is 11 months and still is a puppy.

He is a good little watch dog. His crate is by the door and he sees all. He will bark when he  sees you or anyone. You have to call his name and he will stop. He likes to jump up on you when he first sees you and we have been teaching him not to jump up.

He had the problem of stooling in the house sometimes. We take  him outside to pass urine and stool before we put him into the crate at night and in the morning when he is taken out of the crate. This is a work in progress.

Leash Manners Sunni walks well on a lease when he is going somewhere he wants but can be obstinate when he doesn’t. He will walk with a slack leash but requires occasional reminders to stay at your side. He is currently using a chest leash.

·  Crate/House Training He is crate trained and urinates outside regularly. However, he has had some fecal accidents in the house. If we have been out he will announce himself from his crate when we first return. He in general is accepting of the crate confinement and does not complain if he is not there too long. He would not do well if left in a crate a long time and should have free run of a house. He sometimes complains with a whine when first put in a crate but no generally.

·  Socialization – He is very friendly with people once he recognizes them. He will bark at someone at a distance when he cannot see them well.

·  Energy Level and Exercise – He has high energy and spends the day racing around the yard with our other dogs. He is more relaxed in the evenings when all the other dogs are resting.

·  Daily Structure and Schedule – We feed him in the morning and evening with Pedigree puppy food and some regular dog food. He eats well and will finish 2 cups at one feeding. He loves additives like soup and gravy. We let him and the other dogs out first thing in the morning followed by a treat. He has generally free fun of our fenced in 2 acres and likes to chase squirrels with the other dogs. He is their good playmate.

·  Temperament – He is generally submissive to larger dogs and acts as a peer when placed with dogs his size. He loves to play with puppies but at times he does not realize the difference in size.

·  Obedience Training – He responds well to Sit, Come and down but is still working on Heal. He does a good job at Fetching a ball.

·  Behaviors – He is a loving dog/puppy who greets us when we come home. He will fall asleep on my lap or by my feet at night. He likes to have his own bed but does not jump on our personal bed. Sunni tends to stay close by one of us most of the time unless he is playing with the other dogs. He enjoys playing with toys.

·  Personality Quirks – Sunni is a loving and obedient puppy with a lot of energy that is well socialized, getting along with people and dogs. He is bright, learning quickly, and displays his affection and appreciation for the love of his owners.

·  Ideal Home - Sunni would do best in a home with other dog(s) of similar size and a yard for exercise. He would benefit from occasional trips to a dog park and regular exercise. He will need some training to insure his retention of desirable behaviors. We love the little boy and would like to give him a forever home if we did not already have so many dogs.

According to www.dogbreedinfo.com, the Jack Russell Terrier was developed in 19th century England by a clergyman named Jack Russell. This feisty little terrier was used to hunt small game, particularly fox, by digging the quarry out of its den. Breeders have emphasized its working ability, so the standard is very broad, encompassing a wide range of accepted body types. On English hunts, the Jack Russell Terriers were supposed to be long-legged enough to keep up with the hounds. The energetic and playful Jack Russell makes a good family companion. The Jack Russell Terrier is a perky, merry, devoted, and loving dog. Spirited and obedient, yet absolutely fearless. Careful and amusing, he enjoys games and playing with toys. Friendly and generally kind to children who have been taught not to tease or strike the dog. They are intelligent, yet willful and determined. They have strong hunting instincts (stronger than your average terrier) and should not be trusted with other small animals. They like to chase and explore. Be careful not to let them off the lead unless they are very well-trained. Jack Russells like to bark and dig. They tend to get restless and destructive if not kept fruitfully occupied and well exercised. Jack Russells climb, which means they can climb over a fence, they also jump. A Jack that stands 12 inches high can easily jump five feet. JRTs are not the breed for a inexperienced dog owner. This is a BIG dog in a little dogs body. The owner needs to be as strong-willed as they are, or this little guy will take over.
