These sweet puppies were drop off at the local high kill shelter. They are so sweet and loving and have been in private foster homes learning to ropes of puppy hood for the past 4 weeks!

Foster Update:  If you’re looking for a sweet, attentive and affectionate dog that loves to follow you wherever you go and shower you with kisses all the time, then Harper is your girl. From just three weeks old, this smart little puppy has shown a curious, observatory nature, but can play with the best of them. She has a lot of love to give, and needs a forever home that will give her the same in return.  Her foster mom has had Harper and her brother, Howey from only three weeks old, and loved every minute of her time with Harper. She showed maturity and personality before she could walk, and remains the same girl months later. Harper is a very loving, happy puppy. If dogs could smile, this little girl would always have a great big one on her beautiful face.

Appearance.  A beautiful brindle that gets compliments wherever she goes. (Coloring, height, weight, strength, etc.)

Energy Level.  Moderate energy level. Likes to watch other dogs play, and will jump in hoping and barking when she’s ready. She is ready to go to sleep when you are, and goes right into her crate, sleeping through the night.

Food.  You would never guess this skinny girl has a big appetite! She hops up and down, sometimes barking at you to ‘hurry up!’ while you’re preparing her food, or refill her water bowl. She eats about 3/4 cup IAMS dry puppy food in the morning, and then again around dinner time. Sometimes she prefers to graze if you leave her food out. If you have an adult dog, she’s known to jump into their bowl to eat, too. She tries to get you to share your food with her, as well. Be strong and resist, or you’ll have a constantly begging dog fighting you for your dinner every night!

Adaptability.  Harper bonds very closely with her owner, and is known to cling to you in social situations outside of the home. However, if you are with her and someone comes up to greet her, her tail wags and she’s happy about the attention. She often gets carsick, but that should pass eventually.

Behaviors.  Harper’s foster home had to install a baby gate at their front door to keep her from running outside. She also begs and reaches out to eat anything she can get her paws on. Other than that, Harper is a very well behaved dog. She chews on table legs, cords, boxes, magazines, like a typical puppy would. She jumps when she’s happy to see you and when you put her food or water down. However, she never displays aggressive behavior and has a generally sweet and calm disposition. She also finds hiding spots for her things, so check there if you are missing something!

Human Social Skills.  Harper is cautious in social situations, but should be more comfortable the more she is socialized. She has been with her brother and her foster’s french bulldog that like to play rough, and she holds her own without getting out of hand. However, she prefers to spend a lot of time observing while staying close to you or another dog.

Animal Social Skills.  Harper is very respectful of other dogs and often takes the submissive role. She loves to play, and will greet you with bursting happiness, and always shows she’s glad to see you by jumping up and down, kissing your face, and pulling herself up so you can give her a hug. She usually runs to you when you say her name, and meets you with lots of affection on command. She watches your behavior closely and can anticipate when you’re off to the kitchen where the cookies are kept. She adapts well to a consistent schedule.

Obedience.  While Harper is a smart girl, she can be stubborn with commands when they interfere with what she wants. She has learned to sit and get ‘down’ by watching other dogs and getting scolded for pulling herself up on the coffee table and grabbing whatever she can get her paws on.

Training.  Harper is paper trained, but she prefers puppy pads in smaller areas where she feels there is privacy. Harper is also crate trained, and will go in easily and expect a cookie as her reward and shares the crate with her brother. If you crate her during the day, she and her brother will cry for a bit, but she might be copying her brother.

Personality Quirks.  Harper is a very sweet, gentle and affectionate dog. While she doesn’t want to sit on your lap, she loves to cuddle up next to you, or if you lay down on the couch, she will lay on the arm of the couch and rest her head in your neck. She makes sure you know she loves you by giving lots of kisses at least once an hour, even if that means she has to stop playing to run over to you. She also tries to kiss other dogs. She has a great attention span, and is comfortable looking right into your eyes.

Ideal Home.  Harper would thrive in most any home where her family can show her lots of love and attention. She loves to play with toys, especially if you get down on the ground with her. She’d be great with children because she has a naturally gentle personality, and wants to stay right by your side wherever you go in the house. It would be ideal if her new home had a fenced-in yard. She has been kept inside most of the time, now that she’s older and feeling better, she loves going outside, and jumps around like a deer as soon as her paws hit the grass. Her forever family should have a sense of humor with this funny, clever girl, and prepared to find some of their things chewed on, and appreciative of her loving nature. Prepare to receive lots and lots of kisses!!

*** According to www.dogbreedinfo.com, the Labrador Retriever is a loving, affectionate, lovable, patient dog. Once known as the "St John's Dogs," the Labrador Retriever is one of the most popular breeds in the United States. Originally from Newfoundland, Canada the Labrador was trained to jump overboard into the icy waters to haul fisherman's nets to shore. Specimens were brought to England in the 1800's by English ships coming from Labrador, where the dog's fine retrieving instincts were honed and developed. One of the best family dogs and canine companions because of their gentle, loving disposition, the highly trainable Labrador also excels in drug detection, as a guide for the blind, and service dog for the disabled. The breed is also an outstanding obedience and field trial competitor. Highly intelligent, loyal, willing, and high-spirited. Lively and good-natured, they love to play, especially in water - for they love to swim. They have an excellent, reliable, temperament and are friendly, superb with children and equable with other dogs. They crave human attention and need to feel as though they are part of the family. Labs are easily trained. These dogs are watchdogs, not guard dogs, although some have been known to guard. They have a life expectancy of 10-12 years.
