About Van Gogh the Amazing Camper - Video

  • Microchipped: Yes
  • Housetrained: Yes

Van Gogh was adopted several months ago. He was recently returned because he has some crate anxiety and seems nervous being crated. His owners report that he is great with children, cats and other dogs. He grew up with a small child and a cat! He drools in his crate, whines, and chews ups his bedding if left alone for long periods of times! This puppy is full of love and gentlness.

Van Gogh and his siblings all came from a high kill shelter. Most of the litter do not look much like Great Pyrenees, but their mother was one, so we know they are at least 1/2 Great Pryrenees, as for dad? Who knows??  They were covered in fleas, dirty and in need of some antibiotics for skin infections! They have since been taken care of and are ready for adoption! Were hoping we find wonderful forever homes for these beautiful giants!  Van Gogh was named after nonother than Vincent Van Gogh.

Foster Update:  What a GREAT puppy! We picked him up last Saturday and that very same day he was going in and out our doggie door.  So far, day 5, and we have had NO accidents in the house.  He knows the following commands: Sit, Shake, Wait, Down, and we are working on roll-over!

  • He is playful, but he does not require constant attention.
  • He likes to explore (after all he is a puppy so many things are new to him).
  • He does well walking on a leash but stops frequently to sniff.
  • Friendly, but cautious of other people and their pets.
  • He does not snap or snarl at other dogs that he meets in the neighborhood; he just wants to play.
  • While he does not love the crate; he will go in there and he has not been destructive while crated. We crate him at night and when we are gone from home (which is typically shorter periods of time.). He will occasionally go in on his own for a nap.
  • Will come when called (Thor) he does not come when you call Van Gogh.
  • When we first met him on Saturday he was a bit indifferent to us. We decided to take a chance and bring him home. By day 2 he was already following us around the house and coming to us for affection. Of course he loves a good belly scratch.
  • I think Van Gogh (Thor) will make a wonderful companion to a family (or individual) who is looking for a larger dog. He would also do very well in a home with another dog that he can play with; he loves to play with other dogs.

The Great Pyrenees is a capable and imposing guardian, devoted to its family, and somewhat wary of strangers - human or canine. They are often used to guard livestock. When not provoked, it is calm, well- mannered, and somewhat serious. Courageous, very loyal and obedient. Gentle and affectionate with those he loves. Devoted to family even if self-sacrifice is required. It is very gentle with its family and children. It does best with children when it is raised with them from puppyhood, and if they are not being used as working flock guards be sure to socialize them well with people, place and noises. It has an independent nature, and may try to dominate a less secure or meek owner, and/or an owner who treats the dog as if he is a human , becoming stubborn or terrieral . Owners need to be firm but calm, confident and consistent with the dog. Setting rules the dog must follow and sticking to them. A serious worker, but very independent. Be patient when training the Great Pyrenees, as it may be slightly difficult. The Great Pyrenees is good with non-canine animals, and usually loves cats. These dogs do not reach maturity until they are about 2 years old. Some are not good off the leash and may wander away.  The Great Pyrenees tend to bark a lot and some tend to drool and slobber.
