Heidi is a purebred Dachshund looking for a new home with her best friend, Maggie. They are a happy pair, with wagging tails always in motion. They both love to sit in laps and they ride beautifully in the car. Heidi loves to look out the window.
I am amazed at what happy dogs these two are. They have not come out of a very happy situation. Their owner pretty much neglected them, feeding them hot dogs instead of dog food, leaving them alone in the house for days on end. When they would get out, she'd hope they wouldn't come back. Neighbors kept finding the two and bringing them back. They suggested that she contact a rescue but she couldn't be bothered, figuring it would be easier if they just ran away. Finally, a neighbor offered to find them a home and brought them to Teena of University of Doglando. God love Teena!!! Together we're going to find these two the best home ever!
Heidi and Maggie have already lost their home. We do not want them to lose each other. With this in mind, we will lower their combined adoption fee to $350 if they are adopted together. You'll be glad you did. It wasn't until I started fostering for Judy that I learned that dogs are happy with us, but they are happiest if they also have a canine companion!

1/30 - Volunteer Update - I have spent a lot of time with Maggie and Heidi this week, taking them to the vet to get their shots update, taking them to get pictures taken. They were very patient at the vet and didn't fuss at all to get their shots and blood drawn. They are little dolls, so sweet and friendly, they just want to be with you and be loved. That's not too much to ask for!

According to www.dogbreedinfo.com, the Dachshund (pronounced dak sund) originated in Germany many hundreds of years ago. "Dachs" is the word for badger. The Dachshund was bred to hunt and follow these animals to earth, gradually becoming highly evolved, with shortened legs to dig the prey out and go down inside the burrows. Smaller Dachshunds where bred to hunt hare and stoat. Dachshunds have many "terrier" characteristics. They are versatile and courageous dogs and have been known to take on foxes and otters, besides badgers. Lively and affectionate; proud and bold, almost rash. Tenacious. Can be willful and clownish. Curious and mischievous, they are very clever and may attempt to train the owner rather than allow the opposite. Devoted to his family, some fanciers feel the long-haired variety is calmer than the other two types. The wire-haired variety is more outgoing and clown-like. All are slightly difficult to train. Dachshunds are good dogs to travel with. They are best with older, considerate children and are moderately protective. These little dogs like to bark (their barks are surprisingly loud for their size) and are compulsive diggers. They are generally okay with other pets, however, they can be jealous, irritable, obstinate and very quick to bite. Sometimes they will refuse to be handled. They should not be over fed, for this breed tends to gain weight quickly. They have a life expectancy of 12-15 years.
