Roxie: Update from Foster Mom 01/17/16

Roxie has been my foster dog for the past week and I absolutely love this little girl. If I was in the position to adopt, there is no question that I would adopt her in a minute. She is a little cuddlebug who loves to go for long walks, get belly rubs, and lay on the couch with her human. She has the sweetest demeanor and wants to give many kisses and cuddles to everyone she meets. She does well with other dogs; although she can seem timid at first she is never aggressive. It doesn’t take much to gain her trust and love - just a treat or two and she will be your best bud forever (hint: Wishbone bone marrow treats are her favorite). And look at that face…how could you not fall in love with her?

Because of Roxie’s past, she does become anxious whenever she believes her human is going to leave her. When anxious, she only shows signs of fear and does not become aggressive in any way. She looks to her human for comfort and safety during these times. The good news is that her anxiety has gotten better over a short period of time and she recovers quickly with some reassurance, which makes me hopeful that this will no longer be a problem when she gets used to the company and schedule of her forever family. In the beginning of the week, she would have to follow me around my small apartment to ensure I would not leave. Now, when I go into another room, she can sit quietly and wait for me to return. On walks when there are many people and other dogs around, she will look to me to make sure everything is okay. This has become better and, more often than not, she is able to walk without referring back to me. It’s important for Roxie’s future forever home to know that she becomes very anxious while in the crate at home alone and would require significant training if this was going to be part of Roxie’s daily routine.

Since Roxie is a puppy, she still has that energy and needs training, so she would do the best with someone who has the time and discipline to train her. I believe she would do best with owners who would be home often since she is a puppy, has difficulty in a crate, and requires training. There is no doubt in my mind that Roxie will make a great addition to someone's home and her owner will be lucky to have her.

**She does not like crates....**

*** According to www.dogbreedinfo.com, the Labrador Retriever is a loving, affectionate, lovable, patient dog. Once known as the "St John's Dogs," the Labrador Retriever is one of the most popular breeds in the United States. Originally from Newfoundland, Canada the Labrador was trained to jump overboard into the icy waters to haul fisherman's nets to shore. Specimens were brought to England in the 1800's by English ships coming from Labrador, where the dog's fine retrieving instincts were honed and developed. One of the best family dogs and canine companions because of their gentle, loving disposition, the highly trainable Labrador also excels in drug detection, as a guide for the blind, and service dog for the disabled. The breed is also an outstanding obedience and field trial competitor. Highly intelligent, loyal, willing, and high-spirited. Lively and good-natured, they love to play, especially in water - for they love to swim. They have an excellent, reliable, temperament and are friendly, superb with children and equable with other dogs. They crave human attention and need to feel as though they are part of the family. Labs are easily trained. These dogs are watchdogs, not guard dogs, although some have been known to guard. They have a life expectancy of 10-12 years.
