Description: Bumby is a great big hunk of lovin' dog. He is probably a cross between a Lab and a Rottie. Beautiful combination, don't you think? He reminds me of the dog we had when we were first married. Brandy was a lab/rottie mix and a complete blast. We lived in Alaska then and she was always up for a run along side our mounain bikes, a hike in the woods or a ride in the boat. Something tells me Bumby is the same kind of dog. He already walks well on a leash and knows "sit." You can't go wrong here!!!
Volunteer update 11/11: Bunkie is a great dog! He has the beautiful silky fur the lenght of a golden retervier but has the rottie colors! He is a sweet love of a dog but has some food aggression issues. He is a bit protective of treats and rawhides with other dogs and people! I think its safe to say he will learn to drop this habit once he is in a home were treats and bones are something which are in excess! He can jump up when excited so i won't recommend a home with small children as his size alone could really knock them down! He is so sweet and thankful for just the simpliest things! I took him on a nice long walk the other day and he was so sweet and happy to be out! So well behavied on the leash..he slept in the crate for a hour after his outdoor time!
Foster update 11/17: Bumby is great!! He is doing great with both of our dogs (a 45 lb mix and a 125 lb Dane). We are just working on some food and toy aggression issues Bumby has but he is responding well to our corrections and the positive reinforcement he gets when he plays nice. He is incredibly smart. Within just two days he has learned over 6 new commands and will do them with or without a treat reward. We love this dog!!!
Did you know that black dogs and cats are the least likely to be adopted? I don't know why that is. Maybe they just don't stand out. ZooToo recently interviewed Judy as part of a Black Dog Syndrome story that you can view at the bottom of this page.
*** According to www.dogbreedinfo.com, the Labrador Retriever is a loving, affectionate, lovable, patient dog. Once known as the "St John's Dogs," the Labrador Retriever is one of the most popular breeds in the United States. Originally from Newfoundland, Canada the Labrador was trained to jump overboard into the icy waters to haul fisherman's nets to shore. Specimens were brought to England in the 1800's by English ships coming from Labrador, where the dog's fine retrieving instincts were honed and developed. One of the best family dogs and canine companions because of their gentle, loving disposition, the highly trainable Labrador also excels in drug detection, as a guide for the blind, and service dog for the disabled. The breed is also an outstanding obedience and field trial competitor. Highly intelligent, loyal, willing, and high-spirited. Lively and good-natured, they love to play, especially in water - for they love to swim. They have an excellent, reliable, temperament and are friendly, superb with children and equable with other dogs. They crave human attention and need to feel as though they are part of the family. Labs are easily trained. These dogs are watchdogs, not guard dogs, although some have been known to guard. They have a life expectancy of 10-12 years.
