D4AD Update:
My husband and I were able to take Grizzly out for a day. Grizzly is a wonderful dog! We took him to the Cross Seminole Trail in the morning and then back to our home for a few hours. Grizzly road great in the car. At first he was super excited about his outing going from window to window but once we started moving he settled down. Once we got to the Cross Seminole Trail he was trying to smell everything. He saw people on bikes, runners/joggers, other dogs, and a skateboarder. He wasn't very interested in them, not even if the other dogs were barking and trying get closer to him, but did stop to watch as they moved passed him. He kept the leash slack pretty much most of the time while walking and even jogging. While jogging he stayed right next to me and there was always a lots of slack on the leach. When we got home we let him off the leash and he explored, he didn't try to get into anything that we thought he shouldn't (i.e. trash cans), if we were relaxing on the couch he was there with us with his wagging tail. When I cooked lunch he wasn't trying to be in the kitchen me begging for food, he was content on the couch with my husband getting petted, he also wasn't begging for food while we ate he laid down by us and waited for us to finish. After some relaxing we went out in the backyard and tried to play with the Frisbee and catch. He didn't really get the concept of Frisbee. He almost got catch, knew to get the ball just not where to bring it back to.
Overall, Grizzly will make a wonder addition to someone's home.
Grizzly was pulled from a high kill shelter. As Grizzly is new to our facility we will update his web page when we learn more about this beautiful dog. Grizzly is protective of his food so it is advised not to grab his dish if he is eating. He would do best in a home as an only dog and no children or cats...
***According to dogbreedinfo.com, in April 1899, Capt. Max von Stephanitz registered a dog named Horan as the first Deutsche Schäferhunde, which means German Shepherd Dog in English. Known for their tremendous loyalty and courage, they are calmly confident, but not hostile. This breed needs his people and should not be left isolated for long periods of time. They only bark when it is necessary. Serious and almost human in his intelligence, they have a high learning ability. The breed is so intelligent and learns so readily that it has been used as a sheepdog, guard dog, in police work, as a guide for the blind, in search and rescue service, and in the military. The German Shepherd also excels in many other dog activities including schutzhund, tracking, obedience, agility, flyball, and ring sport. His fine nose can sniff out drugs and intruders, and can alert handlers to the presence of underground mines in time to avoid detonation, or gas leaks in a pipes buried 15 feet underground. A quick daily brushing is best unless hair in the house is not a problem. They should be bathed rarely, only once or twice a year to avoid skin oil depletion. Shepherds have a life expectancy around 13 years.
