Description:
Martok is a lovely, friendly 9 year old Yellow Lab. Sadly, he is looking for a new home because his family has become too busy for him ~ jobs, baby, other responsibilities have left him the odd man out. It isn't his fault ~ he is wonderful. It is just how his story has unfolded.
According to his owners, "Martok is a terrific dog. He seems to have all of the traits associated with labrador retrievers in excess--he is loyal, smart, people friendly, and loving. He is also very adaptable and generally goes with the flow of things. So, although he loves activity--swimming, walking, running, fetching, etc.--he can also adapt to a more laid back environment, and just hang out on his own or with others. He has a lot of youthful energy for an "older" dog (he's nine years old), and has not had any health or behavioral issues to speak of. He's known only one family all of his life, so it will be important for his new family to help him make the adjustment to a a new space and people, provide him with love and attention, and remain committed to him.
I could imagine Martok in all kinds of environments--he's an adaptable dog. He's done well in a small apartment and a large house. He also is used to going outside and returning himself (after pottying), so I wouldn't even say that a fence is essntial. Also, as long as his new family is willing to give him the attention he deserves, I think he'd thrive in a home with small children and other animals.
Martok knows sits, lies down, barks ("speak") on command. He also responds to "out" (used by us during human mealtime), "no," and "go potty." He knows lots of words in general.
We don't have a fence, but he's always gone outside by himself for potty time. He does "his business" then returns to the front door. He's not a "runner" at all. Although he loves to be outdoors, we've always kept him as a house dog.
Martok likes all people, but seems a bit confused by very small children (babies and toddlers). He allows our 1-year-old to dominate him, and seems to reluctantly engage in play with her only occasionally. He has never demonstrated any aggression issues with any children (or adults) in over 9 years. He seems fine with other dogs, though he hasn't had a whole lot of interaction with other animals. Overly active puppies may make him a little annoyed, but he's never demonstrated any aggression. His limited encounters with cats has shown him to be somewhat afraid of them. I would think he could eventually adapt to any environment (including ones with small babies, cats, dogs) as long as he is given separate attention (and some "alone" time every now and then) and is encouraged to feel loved and safe.
Martok loves activity (walks, fetching, swimming), but does okay (no issues) with minimal activity during most of the day. He is a terrific dog with absolutely no real issues to speak of. We just need to find owners who can spend the time with him that we have given him in the past."

And that is Martok's story. Great dog, loving and loyal. Can you give him a happy ending? Is there room in your heart and home for him? If you are a senior citizen, we will reduce Martok's adoption fee to just $50.

*** According to www.dogbreedinfo.com, the Labrador Retriever is a loving, affectionate, lovable, patient dog. Once known as the "St John's Dogs," the Labrador Retriever is one of the most popular breeds in the United States. Originally from Newfoundland, Canada the Labrador was trained to jump overboard into the icy waters to haul fisherman's nets to shore. Specimens were brought to England in the 1800's by English ships coming from Labrador, where the dog's fine retrieving instincts were honed and developed. One of the best family dogs and canine companions because of their gentle, loving disposition, the highly trainable Labrador also excels in drug detection, as a guide for the blind, and service dog for the disabled. The breed is also an outstanding obedience and field trial competitor. Highly intelligent, loyal, willing, and high-spirited. Lively and good-natured, they love to play, espe
