Description: Rex is a drop-dead gorgeous pure-bred German Shepherd. He was adopted from a Michigan breeder by a well-intentioned couple who failed to take into account how much time they weren't home. They trave out of town frequently and even when they are home, they work 12-14 hours a day. That left Rex, a very smart, very energetic dog, home alone far too much. They finally went to Mike Shamp, the Bark Busters trainer who had worked with Rex, and asked his help in finding Rex a more appropriate home. We have a wonderful relationship with Mike, so when he called us, we happily said we'd use our resources to find Rex his forever home. First, let me tell you one of the really neat things about Rex: he comes with the Bark Busters guarantee. Two or three weeks after adopting Rex, a Bark Busters trainer will come to your home, free of charge, and hold a training session with Rex and his new family. Furthermore, should there ever be any behavior issues with Rex in the future, they will come back, again free of charge, and work on those problems. That service right there is invaluable! I think the world of Bark Busters. You can read about my personal experience with Mike and Sparky under our Informaton menu, "Dog Problem? Call Bark Busters". Now, what can we tell you about Rex? He is a pure bred German Shepherd with all the good looks, intelligence and energy you could ask for in the breed. Because he spent so much of his puppyhood alone, he did not get the socialization that would have been preferred. This is an area that Mike has focused on with Rex with his own dogs. According to Mike, "Rex is a very high spirited and intelligent 2 Year Old German Shepherd. He loves to play ball and chase toys. Training comes naturally to him and he learns quickly when play and fun are incorported into his training regimen. He is strong willed and is happiest when he has a leader/owner that is willing to make and enforce the rules. He responds best to praise and games and resists physical and forceful discipline. The right owner can have complete dedication and control by showing attention and loving firmness. He loves to play with other dogs but needs a companion dog that is able to match his strength, will and stamina. Rex would be ideal for an owner that can give him a job like tracking, search and rescue or competition such as agility, Flyball or Frisbee. Activity is his middle name and he loves to be engaged with is master. A quiet, stable home with a minimum of erratic activity and patient owners. Older teenagers okay, would not do well with young children or an active household. A home with a routine schedule and lots of time to spend exercising and training would be a the best fit for Rex. Rex is slightly thunder phobic, needs conditioning to ride in car, Does not like the vaccuum cleaner and loves to play catch the water from the garden hose. We have worked on all of these issues in our home and have had satifactory success. More practice and de-sensitization are needed." You know, often with rescued pets, they come to us a blank slate. Such is not the case with Rex. We know so much about him, his pluses and minuses. I know the right family will have the perfect pet in him, especially with the help of Bark Busters!!! ***According to dogbreedinfo.com, in April 1899, Capt. Max von Stephanitz registered a dog named Horan as the first Deutsche Schà¤ferhunde, which means German Shepherd Dog in English. Known for their tremendous loyalty and courage, they are calmly confident, but not hostile. This breed needs his people and should not be left isolated for long periods of time. They only bark when it is necessary.
Serious and almost human in his intelligence, they have a high learning ability. The breed is so intelligent and learns so readily that it has been used as a sheepdog, guard dog, in police work, as a guide for the blind, in search and rescue service, and in the military. The German Shepherd also excels in many other dog activities including schutzhund, tracking, obedience, agility, flyball, and ring sport. His fine nose can sniff out drugs and intruders, and can alert handlers to the presence of underground mines in time to avoid detonation, or gas leaks in a pipes buried 15 feet underground.
A quick daily brushing is best unless hair in the house is not a problem. They should be bathed rarely, only once or twice a year to avoid skin oil depletion. Shepherds have a life expectancy around 13 years.
