Description:

It was Pet Rescue by Judy's lucky day when Kasper was owner surrendered to us.  This dog is so well behaved in the short time here.  He gets along with other dogs and cats.  He is housetrained and crate trained.  Everything about this dog is good.  The only thing he does is bark if a stranger is around.  Kasper would do good also with another pet.  He will make some lucky family the most perfect pet.  He is ready for everyone to come and meet him.

Appearance Kasper is a bit shy of 20 pounds and a very solid and strong dog, you can’t tell that when leash walking because he will not pull but grab a doggy toy and start a tug of war game, that he loves to play, and get ready to have the toy taken away from you.

Energy Level This is an ideal dog, he will run in the back yard with the other dogs and wear himself out and then is calm and lay on the floor or return to his open crate to rest. The only time I see him very active in the house is if he and one of my other dogs play tug of war with a toy, that is his favorite thing to do, outside of running in the back yard and playing catch me if you can with my other rat terrier.

Food This is an unusual dog in that he is not real food motivated, he does not really like the good dry food offered to him, but will eat a bit now and again when he is hungry enough, I give him a 1/2 can of high quality grain free food in the morning and he is happy to eat that, he will take some treats but not some others. Food can be left out all day for him and he will not over eat, he is a very light eater and is at ideal weight.

Adaptability Kasper adapts very quickly, he learned the doggy door here at my house in the first hour and has never had an accident in the house. He did not know how to behave on the leash well, when he first arrived, but after the first walk with some corrections he had it almost down completely. He comes when called and is learning his basic commands and seems to be a very smart dog.

Behaviors I have seen no bad habits, the only thing destroyed in the house is the stuffed doggy toys, he stays off the furniture and has not been digging, and his barking is only in play or for strange noises from outside. At night I have been crating him and he is happy to stay in his crate quietly all night without a single bark. When let out in the morning he finds his way to the doggy door and returns waiting for his breakfast ( The 1/2 can of wet food, I use the Costco Natures Domain for both the caned and dry food, it’s a high rated, grain free food, that is bargain priced.)

Human Social Skills Kasper is outgoing and friendly with any person or other animal. He immediately upon arriving here wanted to play with my other dogs and was neither afraid nor aggressive. He would do well in a household with another dog.

Animal Social Skills Kasper seems like he would do well in a house with out another animal if you had enough time to show him the attention he seems to seek from you all the time. If I am working in the yard he lays outside to just watch me. If I come in to watch TV he is laying at my feet. If my other dogs get playful he is ready to answer the call and run with them or play fight over a toy or wrestle playfully with each other. I do feel he would be a bit happier with another dog to play with if the dog also enjoyed canine company.

Obedience I have been starting to teach him his basic commands and he is a quick learner. He has learned to sit and come on command and knows what heel means but likes to get ahead a step or two while walking but does not pull and return to you side when commanded. He know the command to go outside and understands to go in his crate for the night when I point and snap my fingers. He understand to not try to steal food from the other dogs when each is tossed a treat. He understands if a treat lands closer to another dog he stays sitting and waits for his and never tries to steal the other dogs food or treats.

TrainingKasper is fully house and crate trained and walks well on the leash and comes when called. He learns quickly and should be able to learn any tricks you care to teach him. I have fostered many dogs and cant think of any that have learned any faster than this one.

Personality Quirks This dog loves to be with you or another canine companion, but is content to be placed in his crate at night time to sleep or if you care to put him there while your away. I have left him in the crate while away and observed his behavior by the security camera upon my return and found him to be calm and quiet the entire time I was gone. I don’t really think crating was necessary but this is how he acts when crated.

Ideal Home I believe Kasper would be happy in any home that can give him some attention and room to run. I do believe he would be happier with another playful dog to keep him occupied. Kasper is friendly and social and prefers to not be alone, but is quiet and calm if he is alone. When he is roaming freely around the house all day he seems to want to be near me or with my other rat terrier. A fenced yard would be a plus as he loves to run back and forth to play.

According to www.dogbreedinfo.com, the Jack Russell Terrier was developed in 19th century England by a clergyman named Jack Russell. This feisty little terrier was used to hunt small game, particularly fox, by digging the quarry out of its den. Breeders have emphasized its working ability, so the standard is very broad, encompassing a wide range of accepted body types. On English hunts, the Jack Russell Terriers were supposed to be long-legged enough to keep up with the hounds. The energetic and playful Jack Russell makes a good family companion. The Jack Russell Terrier is a perky, merry, devoted, and loving dog. Spirited and obedient, yet absolutely fearless. Careful and amusing, he enjoys games and playing with toys. Friendly and generally kind to children who have been taught not to tease or strike the dog. They are intelligent, yet willful and determined. They have strong hunting instincts (stronger than your average terrier) and should not be trusted with other small animals. They like to chase and explore. Be careful not to let them off the lead unless they are very well-trained. Jack Russells like to bark and dig. They tend to get restless and destructive if not kept fruitfully occupied and well exercised. Jack Russells climb, which means they can climb over a fence, they also jump. A Jack that stands 12 inches high can easily jump five feet. JRTs are not the breed for a inexperienced dog owner. This is a BIG dog in a little dogs body. The owner needs to be as strong-willed as they are, or this little guy will take over.
