Description:
Leash Manners – Forrest is still learning to heel on leash. He does not drag you, but if he gets a scent he tends to pull. He is always super excited for his walks and will truly try to please you.

Socialization - Forrest and Fox - a rescue Chihuahua are best buddies. We have had the neighbors dogs over for play dates and he is great with them all. Another neighbor walks his Dobie on the back road to our property and the two of them are just fine in the same vicinity. Forrest is fascinated with my Quaker Parrot. Especially when Bubbalicious starts sounding like the squeaky toys. I have cats and initially Forrest wanted to herd them up. My three cat boys are brothers and are very big guys so they would have nothing of that. We have worked very hard to integrate all of them and are on the verge of it working out nicely. I have a neighbor with a 7 yr. old girl that came over to meet Forrest the other day. He was very well behaved and brought her his tennis ball. They played ball and he was very good with her.

Energy Level and Exercise – Forrest is part Border Collie and part Lab so he is high energy and extremely smart. He has full rein of the fenced in back yard when we are present. We play ball 3 times per day and go for a walk every late afternoon or early evening. When I am watering the plants and flowers on this 1/2 acre he is near and we have a game of run...run...run... with the water hose. Inside the house he has his squeaky chicken and such to toss about and make us laugh that such a big guy actually likes a squeaky toy. Mid morning and late afternoon he will take a nap with Fox on the screened in porch. In the evening he and Fox will lounge in the living room and keep an eye on what is going on in the kitchen.

Daily Structure and Schedule – I addressed part of the structure above. He has Evangers dry food for breakfast and various treats during the day. In the evening he has a mixture of Evangers and Publix canned food.  I do have a crate on the porch which he seems to enjoy taking his naps in. I do not even close the door. He and Fox sleep on a futon in the spare room at night. He will go potty just before bed and will go out again around 6 or 7 am when Joe gets up for work. He is completely house trained.

Confidence Level – Forrest is very confident and intuitive about everything.

Obedience Training – Forrest knows sit, stay, come, shake and the word trouble.Trouble has come with him being able to climb or leap a 6ft. fence with ease. This guy could be in agility training.

Personality – Forrest is a gentleman, smart, playful and loving. He is also protective but not aggressive.  He is alert to his environment. I have taught him a few different commands with his tennis balls. He picks up very quickly to what is expected of him.

Ideal Home - An ideal home for Forrest would be one with an active family. He needs a lot of safe room to run. I think he would prefer cats were not around but he is trying very hard to deal with them.

04/28/2015 Per foster Forrest  likes to go on walks and play ball.  He likes to jump so a fence  no less then 6 feet high is needed.

Forrest Was surrendered to us by his owner who was being deployed overseas for the military. If you know anything about Border Collies you know how energetic and smart this breed is! Although Forrest is full of energy he is very laid back. Can't you give this guy a home?

According to www.dogbreedinfo.com, the Border Collie originated in Northumberland on the Scottish/English border. The breed is descended from old British droving breeds with some spaniel added. An outstanding herder, this hardy, agile, untiring sheepdog, is capable of mastering any type of herd. It is said that the Border Collie has an eye that can hypnotize cattle. He crouches down and mesmerizes the animals with its intense stare. One of the most trainable breeds, the Border Collie also serves well as a narcotics and bomb detection dog and is a frequent high performer in obedience, agility, Frisbee(TM) trials, police work, search & rescue, Flyball, performing tricks and competitive obedience. Some Border Collies have been trained very successfully as blind guide dogs. Currently very good results are obtained with them for general assistance to the handicapped in The Netherlands. The Border Collie is a very intelligent and responsive dog. They thrive on praise, are sensitive and very trainable. The Border Collie is highly energetic with great stamina. Provided it gets sufficient activity to keep it occupied and ample exercise, the Border Collie will get along quite happily with other dogs, and children, however the Border Collie may be aggressive with other dogs of the same sex. They should not be trusted with small non-canine pets, however there are plenty of Border Collies that live and get along with family cats. This breed should be very well socialized as a puppy to prevent shyness. To be truly happy, it needs a lot of: ongoing attention, extensive daily exercise, and a job to do. For those who wish to reach high levels in dog sports, the Border Collie is a gift from heaven. Farmers (for whom the dogs perform work for which they were bred) are also happy with them. It is not surprising that at competitive levels in various sports such as: agility skills, obedience, and sheepdog trials, the Border Collie is represented among the leaders in the sport. They are perfectionist with a permanent will to please. This breed lives for serving you day in and day out. They are not ideal pets for people who have no plans to spend a lot of time with them. These dogs are too intelligent to lie around the house all day with nothing to do. Prospective owners who are looking for just a family pet should consider other similar but calmer breeds, like show line Australian Shepherds and Shetland Sheepdogs. If there is insufficient activity then it will find its own work to do, and that may not be what YOU had in mind when we say the word WORK. They can become destructive if they get bored or if they are ignored. They can become neurotic if they are left alone for long periods, leading to many behavior problems. This breed is known as an escape artist. Because of his strong herding instincts, the Border Collie may be snappish with children and strangers. They do best with an experienced owner that has lots of time to spend with the dog. The adolescent Border Collie often goes through a phase where he challenges his master's authority. Some are highly reactive and sound sensitive, making them a poor choice for families with young children. Dominance level is highly variable in Border Collies. They have a life expectancy of 12-15 years.
