Description:
Artemis was surrendered by a kind woman who found her as a stray. She knew that raising a dog is a huge committment, and that at this time, she couldn't take it on. So she sought help from us. Artemis is a typical puppy: curious, playful, and loving. Everyone is in love with her, and we know you'll fall in love with her the minute you meet her.

Foster Update 9/27/13: Artemis lives up to her name. She is a great dog. Very attentive, lots of self confidence, playful, affectionate and trainable. She follows me everywhere and gives me lots of eye contact inside or outside the house. I have been walking her leashless with my GS dog and she follows me behind my feet ( I carry her after about a minute of walking so she rests and then down again- also I try to walk her on grassy areas only as her paw skin is so young). Currently she is going through house training. I take her out on the grassy area many times (every 2 hours or less)through out the day and tell her to “Busy”. She does her business on command, for which I shower her with lots of praise. Of course, she still has accidents inside the house, so you need someone who is patient and kind with her so she learns properly. I give her only praise for the right action and seldom any negative commands. She gets combative or stubborn with negative words (such as when she tries to chew on my leather sofa :).  So, I instead distract her with her chew toy or direct her towards what I want her to do.

She is currently going through her chewing stage, so she is very mouthy with sharp little teeth. She needs lots of chew toys and I don’t believe a suitable pet for a house with young children yet for this very reason. She shadows my older calm GS dog around. The GS is very patient with her and plays gently with her.

If adopted, we will miss this little girl. She is totally lovable.

***According to dogbreedinfo.com, in April 1899, Capt. Max von Stephanitz registered a dog named Horan as the first Deutsche Schäferhunde, which means German Shepherd Dog in English. Known for their tremendous loyalty and courage, they are calmly confident, but not hostile. This breed needs his people and should not be left isolated for long periods of time. They only bark when it is necessary. Serious and almost human in his intelligence, they have a high learning ability. The breed is so intelligent and learns so readily that it has been used as a sheepdog, guard dog, in police work, as a guide for the blind, in search and rescue service, and in the military. The German Shepherd also excels in many other dog activities including schutzhund, tracking, obedience, agility, flyball, and ring sport. His fine nose can sniff out drugs and intruders, and can alert handlers to the presence of underground mines in time to avoid detonation, or gas leaks in a pipes buried 15 feet underground. A quick daily brushing is best unless hair in the house is not a problem. They should be bathed rarely, only once or twice a year to avoid skin oil depletion. Shepherds have a life expectancy around 13 years.
