Description: Admiral is an Akita mix that we rescued from West Virginia. Yes, you read that right, West Virginia. How did we end up with him? I'm glad you asked. Judy gets e-mails from all over the country asking for her to rescue pets. There was one from a woman in West Virginia who was running a small rescue from her home. The local Zoning board was coming down on her and were going to take all her dogs to the kill shelter. Could Judy help? Well, this story struck a little too close to home for Judy to just come right out and say no. Instead she offered to take five dogs if the woman could arrange to have them brought to Orlando. That seemed safe, right? I mean, how was she going to get them from West Virginia to Florida, especially with gas $4/gallon. Well, Judy hadn't figured on this lady being just as resourceful as she is. One week later, who arrives at our door but a carload of dogs with thick West Virginia accents. I mean, we can hardly understand a thing they say!!! After all their adventures, it will be our pleasure to find forever homes for Admiral and his friends.
Admiral is an awesome guy! He is a love bug but likes to be the top dog among the other pack members. I would suggest that he be the only dog in the family.
Update: 07/19/08 I can't believe that this wonderful guy still hasn't found his forever home! He is a great guy. He needs a firm but loving home. He is wonderful and loving and one of our most stable dogs. He is just a dominant guy and needs his own human that can handle him. He never has had and "accident" in all the time that I have know him and loves to be outside. Please consider this beaut of a guy to add to your family!
8/21 Update: OK, Admiral and cats..... A few weeks ago Admiral bolted into the cat room, freaking our everyone, feline and human. He got Anastasia, a Persian, in a corner and tossed her around, ignoring the other cats who were attacking him. Can you picture this? Shockingly, Anastasia was not hurt at all. Everyone said it was a close call. I wonder. Have you seen Admiral? He is a big, strong guy. If he wanted to hurt a cat, well, that's all she wrote, but Anastasia wasn't hurt at all. Well, OK, she was like totally freaked, but not physically hurt. Then I found out that this morning Admiral dashed into the room where several sick cats are kept in crates. He crawled underneath the crate tower and wouldn't come out. I think he LIKES cats. I could be wrong, really, I could, but I just can't help but wonder if he is trying to get them to play in his big, duffus kind of way! Oh, and if you're wondering why he is wandering around, it's because he is also an escape artist. He is able to open his crate! I don't know how he does it, but he does. His owner will need to use those plastic zip ties or some such thing while he is adjusting to their home. Then I think he will be the best dog ever. I wish more people could meet Admiral. He is so beautiful, has such wonderful presence, such a happy face and a strong wagging tail. We don't usually bring him to adoption events because he barks like a fool at them, and did I mention he gets out of his crate? Please, someone, put in an adoption application for my Admiral and give him a chance. You'll be so glad you did!!!
1/5 Volunteer Update: Seriously? No one has adopted Admiral yet? You've got to be kidding! This is a great dog. We all love him to pieces. Paul Pipiton of Dogs Best Friend of Central Florida has been coming in and working with him, giving him that extra dog-training touch. This is not a dog to be passed by. If you like real dogs ~ you know, not the foo-foo types ~ then you are blowing it by not taking the time to meet Admiral!
1/11 Update Admiral has a girlfriend! He and Sheriff have become best friends. Sheriff is the three-legged dog we rescued off the streets. He absolutely dotes on her. Turns out that he has a real soft spot for the ladies, especially if they let him be in charge. So funny!
1/21 Volunteer Update: Admiral was doing really great with multiple dogs in the fenced in
