• Appearance Luke has the softest, silkiest black fur and just loves to be stroked and petted. He weighed 44 lbs and looked a little on the thin side when I picked him up. Judy said he had been depressed and needed to get out into a home with a family to recuperate.
• Energy Level Low to moderate while in the house. He would like to run if my leash and/or my knees allowed for that on our walks. I'm planning a trip to the dog park with him this weekend, so he can run off leash.
• Food He is eating Nutro, Natural lamb meal and rice and Evangers. Luke prefers the Nutro to the Evangers. He also enjoys about 4 treats a day, Happy Hips Chicken jerky, Purina Proplan chicken treats, and/or Sweet potato strips.
• Adaptability Mr. Luke adapted very quickly to our home. The first night there, he barked when my adult children got up at night to go to the bathroom. Since that first night, he only barks if someone comes to the door.
• Behaviors Cool hand Luke has shown no bad behaviors at all.
• Human Social Skills (Luke is cautiously friendly. He seemed to bond to me very quickly and follows me around when I am home.
• Animal Social Skills I have a cat and a dog as part of our family, and Luke gently greeted both. He has shown no aggression at all and has allowed my dog to be the dominant (even though Luke is bigger by about 15 lbs.)
• Obedience He understands "No" and "Come" • Training (We have a pet door to a fenced back yard, and Luke learned how to use the pet door within a couple of hours of being at our home. He has had zero potty accidents in the house. He does not dig or try to escape the yard. Luke walks pretty well on leash. He does like to wander and sniff a bit with the retractable style leash but does not pull at all. He and my personal dog have walked out to the mail box together for a couple of days without leash. When off leash, Luke stayed in the driveway, sniffing the hedges and immediately returned with me to the house when called. He is a delightful companion and gentleman.
• Personality Quirks He does prefer the Chicken treats to the sweet potatoe treats. Luke is almost smiling when you offer the Happy Hips treats and eagerly but gently takes it from my hands. The sweet potatoe treats, he lays down at his feet and then looks back up at me with an inquiring gaze..... not the veges, I want the meat :-) Another cute thing that Luke does is "talk". It's not barking. It's a yawning, open mouth "speaking" he does to show he's excited when we come home. He's just starting to do this, but once he feels more secure and gets over his "depression" from his former life situation problems, I think he will be more vocal. We used to have a Chow/lab mix that did this same kind of "talking", and it was so sweet.
• Ideal Home (Luke is a senior and pretty laid back. He has not shown interest in any toys, so if someone is looking for a rowdy playmate type of dog, he's just not that type. A family that wants a watchful, loyal, well behaved, silky furred, beautiful companion will be delighted with Luke. I do recommend that Luke's family should be one that allows dogs on the sofa/chairs, as I suspect he's been used to sitting on the sofa or loveseat with his human all his life.
