Description:
Lucy was rescued from a high kill shelter by a wonderful rescuer agency. She has since been placed with our organization to find a great furever home. She is super sweet and a little on the shy side.  She loves other dogs and is a great medium size moderately active dog!

Lucy is so adorable!  She looks like a dog that would be used in commercials!  She is very loving and affectionate especially with her main person.  She is a great size, is in very good physical shape, and not too active, but not too lazy!
  • Leash Manners - She walks well on leash.
  • Crate/House Training - She is completely crate and house trained.
  • Socialization - She is nervous/hesitant about meeting strangers.  People would need to approach her slowly and calmly with patience.  This especially needs to be understood by young children.  However, she does not respond to her nervousness in an aggressive way.  She seems to attach herself to the primary caregiver and follows them around and is very affectionate toward that person especially.  She is gradually paying attention to and loving on the other family members as she feels more and more comfortable with them.  She is very good with other dogs.
  • Energy Level and Exercise - She has moderate energy level.  She is happy to play or just hang out.  Daily walks and/or dog park visits would be nice for her (as for most dogs).
  • Daily Structure and Schedule - She sleeps quietly all night and has periods of activity and napping throughout the day.  She eats twice a day, morning and night and is a good eater.
  • Confidence Level - She is confident with other dogs, but not so much with people.  With people she is not so much extremely fearful, but just cautious.
  • Obedience Training - She does not know any commands yet, but is responsive to corrections and to her name.
  • Behaviors - She barks a little when someone walks in from another room or into the house, but is otherwise very quiet.
  • Personality Quirks -
  • Ideal Home - I think she would be an amazing companion for a person who would like a little buddy to keep company and cuddle with.  She would also do well with a family as long as it would be understood that she would probably give most of her attention to one person at first, although I think it would even out over time especially if everyone shares in her care.

General Information about Hound Dogs

All of the dogs listed below belong to the collection of dogs referred to as Hound Dogs. As implied by its name Hound Dogs have been bred to chase (or hound) a quarry by sight or smell, or a combination of both senses. Sighthounds have exceptional eyesight, combined with the speed and stamina necessary to catch the intended prey once seen, typical examples being the Greyhound and the Whippet. Hounds which rely strongly on the sense of smell to follow the trail of a prey, such as the Bloodhound, quite literally follow their noses, speed and eyesight is of less importance.

Characteristics and features have been introduced and strengthened by breeding from animals who already demonstrated the desired traits. Breeding for appearance was only introduced in the 19th Century. Before this time dogs and puppies were bred to increase useful abilities and traits helpful for the duties they were intended for. Thus, the various hound breeds were initially introduced to help man according to specific requirements such as hunting and running, flushing out and driving game, vermin hunting, guard duties and tracking.

In this day and age only a few hounds still undertake these tasks, but nevertheless, they still harbour the skills and characteristics that made the original Whippet dog breeding program successful. The Hound Breed Group of dogs differ in that some hunt by scent and others by sight. Many hounds are kept in packs, in outdoor kennels. Any dogs and puppies belonging to the Hound breeds require a significant amount of exercise as they have high stamina levels suitable for hunting quarry. There are some breeds in this group who make a distinctive ' baying ' sound - invaluable information should be considering puppies.
