Description:
Franci was rescued from a high kill shelter. This sweet hound is so shy and need a gentle loving home to help her feel comfortable and safe.
  • Leash Manners - She walks very well on a leash.  I use a chain collar on her for walks, because she occasionally gets frightened and lays down.  She listens much better though with the chain, so there isn't any pulling or tugging.  It seems the main thing that scares her on walks are dogs barking in the neighborhood.
  • Crate/House Training - So far she hasn't had a single accident in the house.  She's great about letting me know when she needs to go out.  Also, she hops right into her crate at night or if I need to leave the house.
  • Socialization - She is great with my dog, people who have come over, and with my cats.
  • Energy Level and Exercise - I'd say she's pretty low energy.  We go on a 30 minute walk in the morning, the two dogs play throughout the day (running outside and wrestling inside), and we go on a short walk at night.  Other than that she spends most of the day in my office, snoring on the dog bed.
  • Daily Structure and Schedule - My fiancee lets her out of her crate at 6:30, she goes outside, I feed the dogs at 7, I let them out at lunch, dinner at 6.  I feed her one cup of food provided by PRBJ but will be transitioning her over to my dog's Blue Buffalo brand.
  • Confidence Level - She is definitely a submissive dog.  She is shy, but has gotten more confidence being in my home and with my dog.  If something does scare her she tucks her tail down and usually lays down or hides behind me.
  • Obedience Training - So far she just knows "Come" and I think her name "Franci" is really starting to stick.  I plan do start doing "sit"/"stay" with her.
  • Behaviors - I have not found any bad habits as of this time.  She loves to play with dog toys and is a chewer.  I think if there weren't toys to chew on she could potentially take shoes or other non-chewable items.
  • Personality Quirks - She is very loving and wants to be around people.
  • Ideal Home - She'd be great with kids, other animals, and in a pleasant, quiet home.  I think lots of loud noises or commotion would upset her.  To reiterate, she is just a fabulous little doggie and I'm excited for the family that ends up adopting her.  If you need any other information, please let me know.
According to www.dogbreedinfo.com, the Beagle is one of the most popular scent hounds because of his energy, willingness, and merry, sweet disposition. The breed probably originated as a cross between the Harrier and other hounds in England. The Beagle has been used in packs, alone, and in pairs, for hunting hare, pheasant and quail. He has also served as an excellent narcotics detection dog and makes a fine family companion. The Beagle is a gentle, sweet, lively and curious dog that just loves everyone! A happy little tail-wagger! Sociable, brave and intelligent. Calm and loving. Excellent with children and generally good with other dogs, but should not be trusted with non-canine pets, unless they are socialized with cats and other household animals when they are young. Beagles have minds of their own. They are determined and watchful and require patient, firm training. This breed doesn't like being left alone. Consider buying two if you will be gone a lot. A Beagle has a loud baying cry that was a delight to hunting horsemen, but can be disturbing to family and neighbors. Beagles have a tendency to follow their own noses. They may take off on their own exploration if let off their leash in an unfenced area. Energetic and possessing great stamina, the Beagle needs plenty of exercise, but a yard of reasonable size will take care of most of its requirements. A brisk daily walk will cover the rest. Always use a lead when walking this breed or you will be running the risk of it disappearing in search of wild game. They have a life expectancy of about 12-15 years.
