Little Red was found as a stray running around a local business. This sweet Chihauhua was so scared it took several days to catch her so she could be rescued. She quickly warms up to new people and is a real lover!

Chihuahuas are lively, loyal, intelligent, spunky, playful and friendly dogs. They can also be irritable, unsociable and territorial if not trained properly. A Chihuahua's greatest quality is their intense devotion to their owner which has earned the Chihuahua breed the title of most loyal of canine companions. This can often manifest itself as separation anxiety in the early years of your life together since Chihuahuas not only give affection, they also demand it.
According to www.dogbreedinfo.com, the Chihuahua is the oldest breed on the American continent and the smallest breed in the world. Native to Mexico, nonetheless it seems to have been introduced by the Chinese. It was only brought to Europe at the end of the nineteenth century. The Chihuahua is named after the Mexican state of Chihuahua where he was brought to the rest of the world by travelers. This breed is believed to have been sacred to the Pre-Columbian Indian nations. The Chihuahua is a popular, economical companion dog. Courageous, extremely lively, proud and enterprising, it gives and demands affection. Bold and saucy, it moves swiftly to avoid being stepped on. Chihuahua's are strong-willed, intensely loyal and become very attached to their owners, even to the point of jealousy. They like to lick their owner's faces. It is undeniably suspicious of people except for its owner. When strangers are present, it follows its owner's every move, keeping as close as possible. This breed may snap at teasing children, after all it is too tiny to get away. The Chihuahua must resort to his sharp teeth in self defense. It is not recommended for children. He can be noisy and may require patience to housebreak. Many owners simply paper train this breed. The Chihuahua hates the cold and may shiver, although this may be due to high metabolism as much as temperature or anxiety. It will tolerate and even appreciate a warm sweater on cooler days. They are good little dogs for apartment life. Although it is tempting to carry these dainty creatures about, they will keep fitter if taken for walks. A body harness is safer than a collar. Don't think that just because he is small he should be confined to a small space. Chihuahuas have a life expectancy of 15 or more years.

- Leash Manners - Walks well on a leash. A harness works best for her and she LOVES, LOVES, LOVES to walk. She just looks up at you adoringly as if to say thank you so much for taking me on this walk. However, she will NOT do her business on the walk. She is there to walk and walk only. She's not going to interrupt it to go to the bathroom!
- Crate/House Training - She is no longer in a crate while we are gone and has full run of the house. She usually needs to pee about every 3 hours though so if you are gone longer than that, she may need to be crated.
- Socialization - Good with older kids, dogs and cats. She is wary with strangers in the home but never with family members, so she has displayed some protective behaviors, but nothing that is cause for alarm
- Energy Level and Exercise - Moderate energy level. Loves to run in a fenced in back yard
- Daily Structure and Schedule - Eats 1/2 cup of dry food (NUTRO Natural Chioice Adult for small breed) mixed with ProPlan canned food
- Confidence Level - She does shake in new situations but adjusts quickly. She does scare easily when she hears loud noises.
- Obedience Training - Knows to Sit and wait while food being placed down and waits for permission to eat. You need to stay where you are and call to her and she will come. You can't chase after her.
- Behaviors - She has been snippy with strangers in the home but never with family members, so she has displayed some protective behaviors.
- Personality Quirks - She really enjoys our fenced in yard where she can run and play.
- Ideal Home - Would do best in a home with an active family with a fenced yard and preferably a doggy door so she can go in and out at will. She is such a pretty little girl who is waiting for her forever home.

Like many dogs in the South, Little Red is heartworm positive, but don't let that stop you from adopting a great dog. We are treating her with monthly heartworm preventative, our preferred method. Many heartworm positive dogs go on to lead long and healthy lives.
