Description: Noelle was rescued off the side of the road. This poor sweet Chihuahua puppy was running scared and it took several hours and a couple of volunteers to rescue this amazing little dog. We're hoping to find a great home where this puppy will never be cold and scared again!
Leash Manners - Walks pretty well on leash with a harness. She has to be coaxed along at times.
Crate/House Training - For the most part, she is housetrained with a doggy door to the back yard. If there are throw rugs in the room, she will urinate on the throw rugs. I have laminate and tile floors, so I do not crate her while away from home. For a home without a dog door or with carpets, I would recommend crating. Noelle does not seem to mind the crate. She even goes in by herself sometimes and hides toys and treats in her crate, under the blanket. She urinates when excited. See my comments below in red in the "behavior issues section".
Socialization - Noelle seems to be good with people of all ages/genders/races, kids, dogs, cats. She is very timid with men when she initially meets them. If they approach her gently, give her a treat and stroke her, she warms up pretty quickly.
Energy Level and Exercise - She is moderate to high energy. Noelle goes for walks around the neighborhood with harness and leash. She goes in and out the pet door and runs around the back yard several times a day. She tries to play with my 12 yo dog and 5 yo cat. She still "grooms" them. She likes to play both with me and independently with the following: small kong dog toy, empty plastic Sobe bottles, small tennis balls, cat toys.
Daily Structure and Schedule - Noelle has been sleeping with me. We get up in the morning and walk around the back yard together. She and my other dog (and the cat sometimes) get treats while I'm having my coffee. She and I play with her balls, a bit of toss and fetch. When I get home from work, we have treats and play again. We just discovered that the Sobe bottle is one of her favorite "toys". She carries it, throws it, pushes it, fights with it and licks it. It's hilarious to watch, and I will try to get some video. Noelle eats twice a day of Nature's Variety Instinct Grain-Free Limited Ingredient Diet Lamb Meal Formula. This is a small size kibble. She also gets Happy Hips Chicken Jerky and duck jerky treats as well as small training treats and Kong treats that go with the Kong toys.
Confidence Level - Noelle is not quite Alpha with other animals but is not submissive either. If she were larger, she might be alpha. Noelle is not timid with my other animals at all. She is timid with new situations/surroundings.
Obedience Training - She is starting to learn "Sit" and "Come".
Behaviors - Noelle urinates when excited and sometimes when given a treat. She will also urinate on a throw rug. For the most part, she is potty trained, going in and out the pet door to the yard to potty. I'm saying "no" and taking her outside immediately whenever she does the urinating with treats or on the rug (if I catch her). She then urinates outside, and I say "good girl" and give her a treat. She likes to chew on the hands of her "people". I am discouraging and trying to redirect. Also, if she has access to shoes, she will collect them to her area and chew them.
Personality Quirks - Noelle is loving, affectionate and energetic. Everyone should get a chance to watch her wrestling match with the empty plastic Sobe bottles. Perhaps we should submit one to America's funniest Home videos and win $10,000 for PRBJ.
Ideal Home - Noelle prefers women more than men and would probably adapt most easily to a household that has females. She is still a puppy and needs a family who will be patient with her as she learns. She should not go to a home with a family who expects her to be completely "potty trained" and that would be unaccepting of the occasional urination from excitement.
According to www.dogbreedinfo.com, the Chihuahua is the oldest breed on the American continent and the smallest breed in the world. Native to Mexico, nonetheless it seems to have been introduced by the Chinese. It was only brought to Europe at the end of the nineteenth century. The Chihuahua is named after the Mexican state of Chihuahua where he was brought to the rest of the world by travelers. This breed is believed to have been sacred to the Pre-Columbian Indian nations. The Chihuahua is a popular, economical companion dog. Courageous, extremely lively, proud and enterprising, it gives and demands affection. Bold and saucy, it moves swiftly to avoid being stepped on. Chihuahua's are strong-willed, intensely loyal and become very attached to their owners, even to the point of jealousy. They like to lick their owner's faces. It is undeniably suspicious of people except for its owner. When strangers are present, it follows its owner's every move, keeping as close as possible. This breed may snap at teasing children, after all it is too tiny to get away. The Chihuahua must resort to his sharp teeth in self defense. It is not recommended for children. He can be noisy and may require patience to housebreak. Many owners simply paper train this breed. The Chihuahua hates the cold and may shiver, although this may be due to high metabolism as much as temperature or anxiety. It will tolerate and even appreciate a warm sweater on cooler days. They are good little dogs for apartment life. Although it is tempting to carry these dainty creatures about, they will keep fitter if taken for walks. A body harness is safer than a collar. Don't think that just because he is small he should be confined to a small space. Chihuahuas have a life expectancy of 15 or more years.
