Description:
Koda is looking for a loving home. She is a sweet looking Lab/Spaniel mix whom has plenty of energy and love to give a new owner!
Foster Update:
Leash Manners - Walks well on leash with a prong collar, other collars not so well and tends to pull. She enjoys walks but seems fearful of low growing shrubs at night, likely to improve with frequency.
Crate/House Training - Crate trained and house trained.
Socialization - Good with people. She needs additional training not to jump or climb on people's laps when excited but does well when corrected. She was okay with passive young children but not exposed to any ill-mannered small children. Koda does very well with my teenage daughter. She also responded very well with my male tenant. She is NOT socialized with cats and is aggressive towards them while on/off leash and while in crate. While in my home she was not exposed to other dogs, so don’t know how she reacts to them.
Energy Level and Exercise - Koda is energetic. She enjoys play at least once per day for more than 30 minutes involving fetching/catching a regular sized tennis ball or pouncing a durable old volley/soccer ball. When she sees a ball of any size she wants and expects play.
Daily Structure and Schedule - Her daily schedule has been in crate at night. She is walked 3-4 times per day and generally stays on a leash while out of crate. She is fed Rachel Ray food provided by the shelter in the morning and evening. She requires defecation immediately after meals.
Confidence Level - As I have been informed Koda has been at the shelter for majority of her life, she seems very wary of her surroundings and may be startled by strangers or noise. She has not developed a loyalty to humans yet and may not be trustworthy off the leash. She should receive a lot of praise and reassurance for good behavior and proper correction for bad (works well). She is not shy or submissive.
Obedience Training - Koda is familiar and is work in process with the following firm commands but has a fairly short attention span to follow them, likely because of her age: Sit, Stay, Kennel, Down, Off, Ball (to get her ball) and Come.
Behaviors - As noted above, she is very alert and wary in unfamiliar surroundings (maybe because she has been at shelter all of her life). She is has not shown food aggression. Will cautiously accept paws, rear-end, and tail being touched and doesn’t mind her ears and teeth to be examined.
Personality Quirks - She is very fond of chest rubs and usually demands them by jumping up or climbing on laps. She loves to lick.
Ideal Home - Although I have only had a short time with Koda in my home, I think she will do well in a home with those willing to dedicate some of their undistracted time and attention to continue and improve her character and training. She is not lazy and may do very well at agility training. At this time, a home with small aggressive children and small animals should be avoided. She is very curious, intelligent, and responsive but is easily distracted so, one-on-one training may speed her training. A fenced yard is important for off leash training and she should remain on leash outside of home.
According to www.dogbreedinfo.com, the Labrador Retriever is a loving, affectionate, lovable, patient dog. Once known as the "St John's Dogs," the Labrador Retriever is one of the most popular breeds in the United States. Originally from Newfoundland, Canada the Labrador was trained to jump overboard into the icy waters to haul fisherman's nets to shore. Specimens were brought to England in the 1800's by English ships coming from Labrador, where the dog's fine retrieving instincts were honed and developed. One of the best family dogs and canine companions because of their gentle, loving disposition, the highly trainable Labrador also excels in drug detection, as a guide for the blind, and service dog for the disabled. The breed is also an outstanding obedience and field trial competitor. Highly intelligent, loyal, willing, and high-spirited. Lively and good-natured, they love to play, especially in water - for they love to swim. They have an excellent, reliable, temperament and are friendly, superb with children and equable with other dogs. They crave human attention and need to feel as though they are part of the family. Labs are easily trained. These dogs are watchdogs, not guard dogs, although some have been known to guard. They have a life expectancy of 10-12 years.
