Description:
This darling little girl is Mossy. I'm not really sure what breed she is ~ she has the face and torso of a Dachshund but her legs are longer and she is a bit slimmer (OK, I grew up with Dachshunds and all of them were overweight, so I could be wrong about the slimmer thing ~ maybe their supposed to be slim like this!) We rescued her from a kill shelter where she had been taken by her owners. One of our volunteers spotted her and was heartbroken ~ she had obviously had a litter of puppies because her teats were so enlarged they were almost dragging on the ground! Apparently the owners kept the puppies to sell but tossed aside the momma! Well, as you can see, her milk has already almost dried up and she is getting her girlish figure back. Actually, she needs to gain a little weight. Like a lot of nursing dogs, she has really depleted herself to take care of her babies. Also, she is heartworm positive (there's a real suprise given what we know about her former owners). Her treatment will be taken care of by us. All we are looking for is a loving home for this girl. She really is sweet, very gentle and loving.
4/14 Foster Update:
"Hi, everyone. My husband and I are the lucky ones who are fostering Mossy. I personally have had many, many dogs (my "kids") in my life and Mossy has to be the sweetest and most loving one ever!!! -- including the two we adopted from Pet Rescue by Judy in the past year, and they are sweethearts also. Mossy loves her walks, follows us everywhere, rarely barks, is a major cuddler, and has the most serene eyes. I am so glad Judy saved Mossy from the shelter. She flinches a little when I go to pet her head and I pray it is not affirming my concerns. She needs a home with a lot of love, but the lucky person who adopts Mossy will be the one getting a wonderful gift. I mean this sincerely!"

4/16/08 Update: "Oh my gosh. Mossy's personality is coming out and she is so playful. She likes to play throw the toy. On our walks you can see how happy she is now. She does the Snoopy dance for joy! I wish we could keep her. I love the mornings with my two plus Mossy in bed watching recorded shows before I leave for work. They take turns snuggling with Mom. Mossy is very good with my two boys. She is eating now and I believe I should see a weight gain soon. As I said before, she is SOOOOOO SWEET!! I love this wonderful girl! "

According to www.dogbreedinfo.com, the Dachshund (pronounced dak sund) originated in Germany many hundreds of years ago. "Dachs" is the word for badger. The Dachshund was bred to hunt and follow these animals to earth, gradually becoming highly evolved, with shortened legs to dig the prey out and go down inside the burrows. Smaller Dachshunds where bred to hunt hare and stoat. Dachshunds have many "terrier" characteristics. They are versatile and courageous dogs and have been known to take on foxes and otters, besides badgers. Lively and affectionate; proud and bold, almost rash. Tenacious. Can be willful and clownish. Curious and mischievous, they are very clever and may attempt to train the owner rather than allow the opposite. Devoted to his family, some fanciers feel the long-haired variety is calmer than the other two types. The wire-haired variety is more outgoing and clown-like. All are slightly difficult to train. Dachshunds are good dogs to travel with. They are best with older, considerate children and are moderately protective. These little dogs like to bark (their barks are surprisingly loud for their size) and are compulsive diggers. They are generally okay with other pets, however, they can be jealous, irritable, obstinate and very quick to bite. Sometimes they will refuse to be handled. They should not be over fed, for this breed tends
