Description:

Apple and his buddy Peanut Butter were rescued from a high kill shelter. Yes, they have some funny names but we're naming them in honor of Shipyard Brewing Company, who helps to support our cause with fundraisers! Apple was adopted as a tiny puppy and her family can no longer keep her as she gets jeslous about the other dog in the home.

Apple responds to Sunny now. Here is what Sunny's foster has to say about her:

Appearance      Sunny is a medium built, short hair, beige and black, german shepard mix, that weighs about 35 lbs.

Energy level:      Sunny is still a young dog, she is energetic, but knows when to play and when to take the opportunity to relax on the couch beside you. She sleeps soundly through the night, especially if there is someone to cuddle with. But as soon as she thinks you’re up she is wagging her tail anxiously for a sign your willing to play with her.

Food:         Sunny loves her food. She jumps around waiting for her bowl to be put down for her in the morning and at night. Right now we are feeding her 2 cups of  Evangers, dry food around 7am and again at 5pm.

Adaptability:         Sunny loves to greet newcomers with kisses and tail wagging. But she may seem a little shy at first with new surroundings, but quickly adapts. She whines when she has been in the crate, and seems much happier with the free rein of the house.

Behavior:    We have put Sunny in a spare room when we are not home and she seems to enjoy that. So far she hasn’t chewed or destroyed anything yet.  She seems to be past the puppy chewing stage.

Social skills:      She loves to lick our cat in the face. She will play with our dog, but when she has had enough she lets him know with a snarl or two. She has not bitten him. But Sonny may be more comfortable with her humans and maybe a smaller or older dog.  She is sociable however and friendly with other dogs, cats and children. She loves the attention!

Obedience:    Sonny knows her name and will sit and come. We haven’t tried any other tricks but she seems smart and eager to please. She knows what “no” is and is sensitive to your voice changes. That makes her eager to please and easy to train.

Training:         Sonny is house broken, and may adapt to crating with time and patience to work through the barking. She walks well on a leash and stays with our other dog or us when off the leash.

Ideal Home:            A family or single family with or without cats. I believe smaller dogs or an older dog would be a suitable live in companion for Sonny. She may be a bit jealous and only likes to play on her schedule. She has gotten agitated when our younger dog tries to play with her for too long. She plays at first, but her stamina is not as high as our dog. Sonny has seemed happiest when getting kisses and hugs while watching TV or snuggling in bed. So a family that may not be always out and about and enjoys good old RR you would make a perfect match!

***According to dogbreedinfo.com, in April 1899, Capt. Max von Stephanitz registered a dog named Horan as the first Deutsche Schäferhunde, which means German Shepherd Dog in English. Known for their tremendous loyalty and courage, they are calmly confident, but not hostile. This breed needs his people and should not be left isolated for long periods of time. They only bark when it is necessary. Serious and almost human in his intelligence, they have a high learning ability. The breed is so intelligent and learns so readily that it has been used as a sheepdog, guard dog, in police work, as a guide for the blind, in search and rescue service, and in the military. The German Shepherd also excels in many other dog activities including schutzhund, tracking, obedience, agility, flyball, and ring sport. His fine nose can sniff out drugs and intruders, and can alert handlers to the presence of underground mines in time to avoid detonation, or gas leaks in a pipes buried 15 feet underground. A quick daily brushing is best unless hair in the house is not a problem. They should be bathed rarely, only once or twice a year to avoid skin oil depletion. Shepherds have a life expectancy around 13 years.
