In 2008 we rescued Harry from Animal Control. He was adopted a couple of months later, into a wonderful home! Recently that owner died and the daughter could not care for the dog because of her long hours at work. He knows Paw and sits before eating, likes to sleep with people, runs loose in home, and makes a cacoon for himself under the blankets. Harry would be good with a bigger dog as a companion, would be best in a home without children. We're hoping to get this senior dog a wonderful home. There are pictures from when Harry was adopted and he has since gained some weight (recent photos) although we're hoping to get him to lose a few pounds!
Foster Update: Harry is such a cutie. He is the biggest Chi I've ever seen. It adds to his personality and character I believe. He is very loving and affectionate. He grunts and tries to hide himself up against me or the blankets. He wines a little but we are not sure why. He sounds cute like a big baby. He loves to be loved on and petted. He sleeps with me at night. I think if he had it his way he would stay in bed 24/7 and order room service. He gets along well with my dog and three teenagers. He rides well in the car. He did well at bath time but of course it's not his favorite thing to do. He has had no accidents in the home. He likes to play tug-a-war with the stuffed animals. He loves pillows and blankets. He also loves to dive into a nice big pile of clean clothes fresh out of the dryer. He would do well in a home with older children. I don't suggest younger kids because Harry is an older dog who loves to sleep.
Foster Update: Harry continues to be a sweetie-pie and has adjusted to our schedule well. He has no problem being crated while the kids are at school and I am at work for the day. He is completely potty trained. He still makes his little piggy-grunting noises and whines when he is wanting love and affection or is trying to communicate his wants to you. We have learned that the crying is a indication of "potty-time" or "i'm hungry or thirsty". The grunting he does when he is loving on us. He loves soft squeaky toys and can be a little rough with them. He likes to be held and cuddle close to you in bed. He let me hold him like a baby last night. The little guy just snored away. He loves laying on pillows too. He is quiet, not yip-yap-pity at all except to alert us when someone comes inside. He likes to be with his people and will stay in what ever room you are in. He does like the bathroom trash, he will get into that if you leave the bathroom door open. He is a healthy eater and enjoys his dinner and morning snacks. Harry would make a wonderful family pet.
According to www.dogbreedinfo.com, the Chihuahua is the oldest breed on the American continent and the smallest breed in the world. Native to Mexico, nonetheless it seems to have been introduced by the Chinese. It was only brought to Europe at the end of the nineteenth century. The Chihuahua is named after the Mexican state of Chihuahua where he was brought to the rest of the world by travelers. This breed is believed to have been sacred to the Pre-Columbian Indian nations. The Chihuahua is a popular, economical companion dog. Courageous, extremely lively, proud and enterprising, it gives and demands affection. Bold and saucy, it moves swiftly to avoid being stepped on. Chihuahua's are strong-willed, intensely loyal and become very attached to their owners, even to the point of jealousy. They like to lick their owner's faces. It is undeniably suspicious of people except for its owner. When strangers are present, it follows its owner's every move, keeping as close as possible. This breed may snap at teasing children, after all it is too tiny to get away. The Chihuahua must resort to his sharp teeth in self defense. It is not recommended for children. He can be noisy and may require patience to housebreak. Many owners simply paper train this breed. The Chihuahua hates the cold and may shiver, although this may be due to high metabolism as much as temperature or anxiety. It will tolerate and even appreciate a warm sweater on cooler days. They are good little dogs for apartment life. Although it is tempting to carry these dainty creatures about, they will keep fitter if taken for walks. A body harness is safer than a collar. Don't think that just because he is small he should be confined to a small space. Chihuahuas have a life expectancy of 15 or more years.
