Description:

Pumba is a...?? He is a dog but looks closer to the Lion King character Pumba with longer hair! He is so sweet and loving! He is a bit older, grey hair around the muzzle, missing some teeth but he is so loving that we couldn't help but want to save him. He requires medicated baths and anti-itch pills to keep his skin and ear infections under control.  He also requires a thyroid pill once daily for the rest of his life but it's very inexpensive.

Foster Update:  Pumba has really come out of his shell! When I first brought him home a little over 2 weeks ago, he was perfectly friendly with no bad habits or anything, but he just wasn't very, I don't know, involved? He was friendly, but not affectionate, if that makes sense. My guess (not that I have any way of confirming this) is that he was kept in a dog house all the time or simply left in a yard. He was content just chewing on bones and not doing much. But I've gradually watched him start playing with the other dogs, and start running over to me when I get home with a wagging tail for belly scratches, and to just generally be playful and affectionate.  I feel like I'm watching him learn how to be a pet! He's very mellow, but definitely has plenty of pep left in him. Just taking him for a short hike this past weekend, I laughed at the notion that people tend to overlook senior dogs because they "can't do anything". Senior pets are the best! They've grown out of their puppy phase so when you just want to hang out at the house, they're not running in circles and destroying everything. But they still have enough energy to do a lot of fun things.  A few general things about him: he's housebroken, he doesn't need to be crated, he loves bones, he couldn't care less about my cats, he hasn't displayed any aggression towards other animals or people, he doesn't seem to know many commands (another reason I think he was left in a yard) but then again he doesn't really do a whole lot that needs correcting, he needs a thyroid pill once a day but he doesn't put up any fuss when it's time to take it, and his skin is still very itchy but it seems like his hair is growing back in the bare spots. I honestly think he'd be such a great pet for anyone who wants a sweet and mellow dog. And his flopped over little pig ears and basset hound legs are just too cute!

Foster Update:  Sometimes I just can't believe Pumba hasn't been adopted. I know he's still a little scraggly-looking to people looking for a "perfect" dog, but he's SO great! Seriously! He's old enough to where if you just want to lie around the house, then that's all he wants to do, but at the same time he still loves to go for walks and play when you want to. Did I mention how great he is with every other dog he meets? And not just dogs, but cats and even rabbits! He's just all around easy-going. And with his thyroid medicine adjusted to a higher dose, his hair is coming in better and looks great. He's been through a lot and is still absolutely adorable and has the best temperament. What more could anyone want?!

Pumba qualifies for our Seniors for Seniors program!  If adopted by a senior (55+) his adoption fee is $50.

According to www.dogbreedinfo.com, the Dachshund (pronounced dak sund) originated in Germany many hundreds of years ago. "Dachs" is the word for badger. The Dachshund was bred to hunt and follow these animals to earth, gradually becoming highly evolved, with shortened legs to dig the prey out and go down inside the burrows. Smaller Dachshunds where bred to hunt hare and stoat. Dachshunds have many "terrier" characteristics. They are versatile and courageous dogs and have been known to take on foxes and otters, besides badgers. Lively and affectionate; proud and bold, almost rash. Tenacious. Can be willful and clownish. Curious and mischievous, they are very clever and may attempt to train the owner rather than allow the opposite. Devoted to his family, some fanciers feel the long-haired variety is calmer than the other two types. The wire-haired variety is more outgoing and clown-like. All are slightly difficult to train. Dachshunds are good dogs to travel with. They are best with older, considerate children and are moderately protective. These little dogs like to bark (their barks are surprisingly loud for their size) and are compulsive diggers. They are generally okay with other pets, however, they can be jealous, irritable, obstinate and very quick to bite. Sometimes they will refuse to be handled. They should not be over fed, for this breed tends to gain weight quickly. They have a life expectancy of 12-15 years.
