Description:

Foster Update 10/6 -

He is the greatest little dog. We have  2 other puppies and 4 dogs and  Dooley keeps up with all of them. His little legs get him all over our yard.  He eats and sleeps  in his crate .  He likes to be held and sleep on your lap. He is really precious. He greets you with licks and a pick me up. I have not seen him do his business in the house. He enjoys  toys, especially the  ones that make noise.

I feed him dry puppy food with some canned food on  the side two times a day. He also gets plain yogurt in the morning. We will miss him when he goes to his forever home.

Dooley and his brother, Donovan, came to us from a high kill shelter.

"Dooley" is an Irish name meaning "Blackhaired hero." DOOLEY had a broken ear that grew back backwards, so he looks like his ear is totally back and you always want to pull it down. I asked the vet if they could do anything cosmetically, but alas, they said 'no.'  So, consider his ear as part of his charater and perserverance! When we got DOOLEY, his brother had been given all his shots, but DOOLEY had not, since he was OBVIOUSLY first on the chopping block to be euthenized due to his simple injury (that would not affect him becoming a great, healthy dog).  So while his brother was picked to eventually be adopted out, DOOLEY luckily got wisked away to PRBJ to find him the perfect home.   DOOLEY is very friendly, a jump in your arms, tail wagging kind of guy who will be a great companion to any family! He is a very fun-loving, active, happy-go-lucky pup. His floppy ear teaches all of us, that dogs (and people) are not made the same, but have a lot of special gifts inside to share!

9/27 Foster Update:  DOOLEY is about 80% house trained; he still has a few accidents but they are more our fault than his.   He knows to sit for his treats and to go into his kennel with a treat.   He is such a wonderful, sweet puppy!  He is very well behaved.  We have three other dogs and DOOLEY gets along perfectly with them.  He spends a lot of time playing with our youngest Basset Hound.  They have such fun, running around and playing.   When DOOLEY is tired, he loves to sleep, snuggled up with you.   He loves people so much!   I cannot say enough how sweet of a little puppy he is!

9/10 foster update:  DOOLEY is a wonderful dog!  I am surprised at how well behaved he is for such a young pup.  He gets along great with our other three dogs and is such a sweet, loving puppy; he loves to snuggle in your lap.  DOOLEY is not yet housebroken, but we have been taking him out a lot and he sees our other dogs 'doing their business,' and he jumps right in.  He knows to go when we take him out, so he is learning.  I cannot say enough about how sweet he is.   We have two kids, ages 11 and 14 and he is perfect with them.   We have had our neighbor kids over who are much younger with no issues.

*** According to www.dogbreedinfo.com, the Labrador Retriever is a loving, affectionate, lovable, patient dog. Once known as the "St John's Dogs," the Labrador Retriever is one of the most popular breeds in the United States. Originally from Newfoundland, Canada the Labrador was trained to jump overboard into the icy waters to haul fisherman's nets to shore. Specimens were brought to England in the 1800's by English ships coming from Labrador, where the dog's fine retrieving instincts were honed and developed. One of the best family dogs and canine companions because of their gentle, loving disposition, the highly trainable Labrador also excels in drug detection, as a guide for the blind, and service dog for the disabled. The breed is also an outstanding obedience and field trial competitor. Highly intelligent, loyal, willing, and high-spirited. Lively and good-natured, they love to play, especially in water - for they love to swim. They have an excellent, reliable, temperament and are friendly, superb with children and equable with other dogs. They crave human attention and need to feel as though they are part of the family. Labs are easily trained. These dogs are watchdogs, not guard dogs, although some have been known to guard. They have a life expectancy of 10-12 years.
