Ross was found by a police officer and brought to Judy. Here are some highlights of Ross's personality and her daily routine in her foster home:
Foster Update: Ross (aka Rossy) has been a pleasure to foster. She is great on walks, she stays on my left and doesn't bark or jump on strangers who pass by. I usually give her a short walk in the morning and a little longer walk in the evening. I would say her energy level is moderate/low (the two walks a day really tire her out). I feed her twice a day of Veterinarian Formulated Dry Puppy food. She does like to chew so we got her a big bone that she chews on and hides in her crate when she's full. By the way, she is fully crate trained. I'm working on a couple tricks right now, she understands sit the best and I'm sure she'll get the other tricks with more practice, as she's a very curious dog and learns quickly. Also, I've introduced her to many dogs and she has done very well with all of them! She is very good with children as well, usually she'll just lay on her back so they can scratch her and she can lick them. Rossy really likes to lick new people. The tricks she can do are: sit, shake, down. I'm still working on stay, roll, and spin. She's a great dog and deserves a great family and home. The more time I've spent with her, the more I know how lucky her future family is.
Foster Update: Ross is by far the most loving dog I have ever met. She weighs around 40lbs but thinks she weighs 5. If you just call her name, regardless if you are a stranger or someone familiar, she will run to you and lick your hand like there's no tomorrow! She has NEVER nipped or bitten anybody in or around my home even when she gets hyper and plays. She's very responsive and submissive to us and when we say "No" she immediately stops what she's doing and looks to us for more guidance. There has even been times where I have to correct MY dog and poor Ross thinks I'm yelling at her and runs to her crate and lays down. Of course, I go over and pet her and she comes back and is happy and excited all over again. She would be a perfect companion for anybody! Amazingly, she's also very good with smaller dogs. She plays with my 2 small dogs ALL DAY and they never get hurt. I was very surprised at how gentle she is with them. She even turns on her back and allows them to jump on top of her! We have been working with her during walks to stop pulling. She likes to pull and gets easily distracted by her nose. However, if you use a prong collar, this can be easily corrected in a matter of weeks. At the adoption center, she did get into a little quarrel with another large dog. I do not have any large dogs and this was the first time I saw her interacting with another dog of her size but I corrected her as soon as it happened and she immediately submitted and rolled on her back. She's a very responsive and attentive dogs that just needs someone to teach her what she can and cannot do. Another thing we're working on is that she likes to jump up and put her paws on your lap. I correct this by saying "OFF" and immediately gets down. I do NOT pet her unless she is sitting down AND calm. She is responding SUPER WELL to this training! She is NOT allowed on the couch at my house but I allow her to sit by my feet and she rests her head on my lap. She has jumped on a couple times but the second I said "DOWN" she jumped right off. Again, I am AMAZED at how well she listens. She's still pretty young, so she has a lot of energy but it's NOT destructive energy. She ONLY chews on her toys and has NEVER grabbed anything that was my personal belongings. I am feeding her VF Puppy Food 2x a day: once when I wake up after she goes outside to potty and again AFTER I eat dinner. She always eats all of her food when I put it down and doesn't leave any behind. I also feed her in her crate with the door open and she lays down and eats her food in there. I leave her crate door open all day and it's in my living room. This way when I'm on the couch watching TV and she wants to lay down, she can lay in her crate on her comfy blankets and not on my couch. She's very good at this. All I need to do is say "Ross, Crate" and she goes right in. Sometimes when she's a bit hyper I just tap on the crate and again she runs right in. She hasn't had any accidents in the house for about 5 days now and seems to be pretty well potty trained. She has never had an accident in her crate while I'm at work. The only thing is that she doesn't know how to "ask" to go outside yet and we are working on it. SHe LOVES to run in the backyard and when it's time to come in, she does have a tendency to jump on the door and paw at it. However, I say "NO" (she can hear me through the door!) and I wait until she sits and is calm before I let her in. She is so submissive that all she needs is a simple "NO" as a correction, she does not need to be smacked on the butt so please don't do this to her! The only time she would need physical correction is on the leash. If she pulls, you jerk her leash once to correct her. She is not a dog who wants to challenge her owner for alpha status, she is very happy to be a lower member of the pack. I recently discovered that her FAVORITE THING EVER is a black (super durable) kong with peanut butter. I mean, I know all dogs love it, but wow she goes nuts. Whenever I want to take a nap but I don't want to lock her in her crate, I give her the kong with peanut butter and put it in her crate but leave the door open, she goes in there and it takes her (not kidding) about 2 hours to get every little bit of peanut butter out of the kong... LOVE that thing! Her previous foster also taught her "sit", "shake", and "down" and I have been practicing these with her too, she knows them very very well! All in all, Ross is a VERY loving, very submissive, easy to train, eager to learn, BEAUTIFUL dog. ANyone would be SO lucky to have her as she is a NEAR perfect dog! She just needs persistence and lots of love and positive/negative reinforcement. All around great dog, great potential, and one of the best cuddlers in Florida definitely!
Foster Update: Ross is NOT good with cats. Ross is NOT good with bigger dogs. She is not aggressive with them but gets intimated and ends up nipping at them in a defensive manner. She tries to avoid them as best as she can but she gets nervous and reacts when they start smelling her and getting close to her face. She's GREAT with dogs smaller than her because they do not intimidate her. I swear she thinks she's a little dog.
*** According to www.dogbreedinfo.com, the Labrador Retriever is a loving, affectionate, lovable, patient dog. Once known as the "St John's Dogs," the Labrador Retriever is one of the most popular breeds in the United States. Originally from Newfoundland, Canada the Labrador was trained to jump overboard into the icy waters to haul fisherman's nets to shore. Specimens were brought to England in the 1800's by English ships coming from Labrador, where the dog's fine retrieving instincts were honed and developed. One of the best family dogs and canine companions because of their gentle, loving disposition, the highly trainable Labrador also excels in drug detection, as a guide for the blind, and service dog for the disabled. The breed is also an outstanding obedience and field trial competitor. Highly intelligent, loyal, willing, and high-spirited. Lively and good-natured, they love to play, especially in water - for they love to swim. They have an excellent, reliable, temperament and are friendly, superb with children and equable with other dogs. They crave human attention and need to feel as though they are part of the family. Labs are easily trained. These dogs are watchdogs, not guard dogs, although some have been known to guard. They have a life expectancy of 10-12 years.
