Nike was found at a dog park abandoned! This guy is so sweet and loving...
Foster update 6/10/11: I found Nike at the dog park one evening. He was running around just wanting to play with every dog! As the night wore on and people left one by one I noticed the poor guy didn't have a owner! When it got dark I loaded up my dogs and threw him in the car too! After a couple of baths, a good de-ticking, and some ear cleaning, this pup looks great! He has a wonderful personality loves all dogs (big and small), he is good with my cats, and seems to be housebroken. He listens well but needs some leash walking manners...he loves the park too! He does need to be lifted into the car (as he is not sure about it) but seems to ride very comfortably once in. I can't wait to find this guy a wonderful forever home that will love him and never abandon him again!
Foster Update 6/18: Nike has been a wonderful dog to have in my home! He loves to play and wrestle with my other foster dog! He loves to play with the dogs he knows at my work! He does seem a bit tense when meeting larger dogs at the park but just stiffens and then I call him and he moves on. He loves him food and eats his bowl in seconds. He has learn to love the car and jumps right in! He comes when called about 70% of the time but listens when it really counts! He has continued to do well with my cats. He is about 90% housetrained but I suggest crating him when your not home. Although he broke out of the crate when I left him for 10 hours (while I was at work), he did not distroy anything in my home and only had one accident. I think he is on his ways to being 100% trained! He has a wonderfully sweet personality, but can also be stubborn and needs some good exercise daily. I take him to the dog park each day for about 1-2 hours to let him run and get his energy out.
*** According to www.dogbreedinfo.com, the Labrador Retriever is a loving, affectionate, lovable, patient dog. Once known as the "St John's Dogs," the Labrador Retriever is one of the most popular breeds in the United States. Originally from Newfoundland, Canada the Labrador was trained to jump overboard into the icy waters to haul fisherman's nets to shore. Specimens were brought to England in the 1800's by English ships coming from Labrador, where the dog's fine retrieving instincts were honed and developed. One of the best family dogs and canine companions because of their gentle, loving disposition, the highly trainable Labrador also excels in drug detection, as a guide for the blind, and service dog for the disabled. The breed is also an outstanding obedience and field trial competitor. Highly intelligent, loyal, willing, and high-spirited. Lively and good-natured, they love to play, especially in water - for they love to swim. They have an excellent, reliable, temperament and are friendly, superb with children and equable with other dogs. They crave human attention and need to feel as though they are part of the family. Labs are easily trained. These dogs are watchdogs, not guard dogs, although some have been known to guard. They have a life expectancy of 10-12 years.
