Rose came to us from another shelter after a terrible fire that closed their shelter. Rose was a stray and it seems like she had been one for some time. She is VERY timid and will take some TLC to get some loving out of this girl! But I'm sure she will be worth the work... You can see in her eyes that she wants to trust! She is having a hard time overcoming her fear of men. She bonds well with women, but clearly has had some very bad experiences with men.
Foster Update: Rose is an absolute sweetheart! It takes her a while to warm up to new people but once she does she is nothing but love. You can see the appreciation in her eyes. Rose would do best in a women only home because she is so afraid of men. We have been working with her but thus far have not seen any improvement. Rose gets scared at sudden movements and sounds so it would be best to have no young kids. Although she is timid she has never shown any aggression whatsoever. She loves to play and is so gentle. Rose is such a lady - even when you give her treats, she takes them ever so gently. Rose is houstrained, good with other dogs, walks well on the leash, and does not jump up on people. If I didn't have two boys she would definately be a keeper! She truly does deserve a home with a family who will love her and assure her that she will never be mistreated again. And I know that whoever adopts this gentle soul will be more than blessed - truly!
*** According to www.dogbreedinfo.com, the Labrador Retriever is a loving, affectionate, lovable, patient dog. Once known as the "St John's Dogs," the Labrador Retriever is one of the most popular breeds in the United States. Originally from Newfoundland, Canada the Labrador was trained to jump overboard into the icy waters to haul fisherman's nets to shore. Specimens were brought to England in the 1800's by English ships coming from Labrador, where the dog's fine retrieving instincts were honed and developed. One of the best family dogs and canine companions because of their gentle, loving disposition, the highly trainable Labrador also excels in drug detection, as a guide for the blind, and service dog for the disabled. The breed is also an outstanding obedience and field trial competitor. Highly intelligent, loyal, willing, and high-spirited. Lively and good-natured, they love to play, especially in water - for they love to swim. They have an excellent, reliable, temperament and are friendly, superb with children and equable with other dogs. They crave human attention and need to feel as though they are part of the family. Labs are easily trained. These dogs are watchdogs, not guard dogs, although some have been known to guard. They have a life expectancy of 10-12 years.
