Ted the German Shepherd's companion, Skittle (adopted) can also be seen on our website.
Description: Teddy is a cuddly shepherd/collie mix, one brown eye and one blue eye! How cute is that! This is the fourth time that Teddy has had to find a new home through no fault of his own. The first time was when his owner never came back to pick him up from the kennel where he was being boarded. One of the kennel employees couldn't bear the idea of him being killed so she adopted him into her life and home. When she became a full-time student with a part-time job, she recognized that she was not providing him with the type of life that he so deserved and asked us to help find him a home. Fortunately a wonderful couple adopted Teddy and he settled quickly into his new home. That was in September of 2007. In December 2008 the wife was diagnosed with a recurrance of cancer. Having been through it once, they knew that they would not be able to give Teddy the love and care that he needed so, once again, we are looking for the perfect home for this terrific home. Do you have room in your heart and home for Teddy? He is wonderful, a little funny looking because his previous owner shaved him down to reduce his wife's allergies. But hair grows back, so no big deal. Teddy is very loving and gets along with cats. He is a bit intimidated by other dogs and can act like a fool until he knows that they aren't going to hurt him (my dog does the same thing ~ we skip the dog parks). Teddy knows how to sit, lie down, stay, and come when called.
According to the person who rescued him from the kennel, "Teddy will bark if startled and if he sees people rough housing with each other, but he has never done more than whimper and gently take their arm in his mouth to try to stop the "attacker". Very young children make Teddy anxious. He often whimpers and tries to hide behind me when he sees them. They have gotten on fine with children that are about 10 years old. Teddy is a very loving and people-oriented dog. He is often known to "burrow" under anyone who shows him attention and rub against them almost like a cat would. He is a bit jumpy and will bark at sudden sounds, but is quite submissive and wants nothing more than to please you. Just the sound of his name will have his tail thumping against the ground. "
***According to dogbreedinfo.com, in April 1899, Capt. Max von Stephanitz registered a dog named Horan as the first Deutsche Schà¤ferhunde, which means German Shepherd Dog in English. Known for their tremendous loyalty and courage, they are calmly confident, but not hostile. This breed needs his people and should not be left isolated for long periods of time. They only bark when it is necessary.
Serious and almost human in his intelligence, they have a high learning ability. The breed is so intelligent and learns so readily that it has been used as a sheepdog, guard dog, in police work, as a guide for the blind, in search and rescue service, and in the military. The German Shepherd also excels in many other dog activities including schutzhund, tracking, obedience, agility, flyball, and ring sport. His fine nose can sniff out drugs and intruders, and can alert handlers to the presence of underground mines in time to avoid detonation, or gas leaks in a pipes buried 15 feet underground.
A quick daily brushing is best unless hair in the house is not a problem. They should be bathed rarely, only once or twice a year to avoid skin oil depletion. Shepherds have a life expectancy around 13 years.
