Description:
We rescued Charlie Chan from a high kill shelter because his time was up.  He's a great dog who is good with people and kids. He is very playful and gets along well with other playful dogs.  He even knows how to fetch so he could bring the newspaper in for you in the mornings.  All he needs now is his forever home. VERY SWEET!

Foster Update:  Charlie is a great companion and every day I look at him and wonder how he has been passed up for so long.  I would say he is a medium dog, he is bigger than a Jack Russell.  I believe he is maxed out on his height.  He loves to play and exercise.  I live on a 9 acre farm and just this past week we finally took him off his leash.  He comes when we call him and he just runs around playing while we feed the horses.  My daughter whom is 12 will take him to the arena and set up horse jumps and they run around jumping jumps.  He does pull on the leash when he gets excited but we have been working on it and he responds nicely.  If we go out in public and the kids want to lead him we use a gentle leader and he is great with it.  We have brought him to the dog park once and he was great, got along with all the dogs big and small and played for hours.

I think he would be a great jogging partner as he as active and as a deterrent if need be.  At the house if he sees someone he has not seen before he will bark and growl and his hair stands up on his back but as soon as we say, "It's okay Charlie" he calms right down and then won't leave the person alone wanting attention!

He loves his toys and bones, I keep a supply for him.  So far the only one I have found he cannot destruct within a matter of hours are the ones at Publix in the meat section.  I have not experienced him chewing on anything that is not his. He loves his dog pillows.  He does sleep at his crate at night, I usually take him out to go potty around 9ish then he sleeps sound until we get up in the morning around 630ish and take him out first thing.

Not sure if you have any cats but just in case he does like to chase, but I believe that if socialized he would stop that.  My cat is to much of a scardie cat to help him through this.  We do have a bunny and at first he did stand at her cage and growl and bark but now it's like she does not even exist and their crates back up to each other and the bunny hangs out in the corner that backs to Charlie's cage.

He does not respond well to "yelling" corrective behavior.  When he is doing something he is not supposed to a simple "Charlie No" in a normal tone voice but strict sounding he responds well to and he will drop his head and give you those puppy dog eyes.  When outside running we have been working on the "Charlie Come" command but right now the best way to have him come back, when he has is mind on something else, is in a cheery voice just say "Come on Charlie" and he comes flying to you.  As he gets a little exercise he is good in the house he will lay around and chew on his bones, I work from home so I have been home with him almost every day.  If he does not get some energy out in the morning he will be a little of nuisance in the sense he will follow you everywhere or keep coming up to you wanting attention.  I just grab one of his toys and we play fetch for a few minutes then he is good to go.  I do not allow the animals on my furniture but if you do not mind that he would be a couch lap dog and sleep next to you in bed.  He loves the human touch and loves to be close to his family.

Here is a brief description of Charlie's energetic personality:
-He loves kids, he sticks to my two like glue
-Great at the dog park and Petsmart
-He does like to chase our cat but once she hides he walks away and forgets about her
-We have let him off the leash the past two days and he has been great coming when called and stays right around us, he tried to chase our horses once and when we said No, we have not had a problem since now he runs up and down the fence line with them, but on the opposite side.
-Loves going on car rides
-He sleeps in his crate at night
-He LOVES ATTENTION, if I let him get on the furniture he would be sitting on our laps and laying in bed next to us.
-He loves his bones
-Will sit, down and roll over with veberal and hand commands

Like many dogs in the South, Charlie Chan is heartworm positive, but don't let that stop you from adopting a great dog.  We are treating him with monthly heartworm preventative, our preferred method.  Most heartworm positive dogs go on to lead long and healthy lives.

According to www.dogbreedinfo.com, the English Coonhound is also known as the Redtick Coonhound. It has been said that the history of the English Coonhound is the history of all coonhounds. With the exception of the Plott Hound, most coonhounds can be traced back to the English Foxhound. In 1905 the English Coonhound was first registered by UKC under the name of English fox & Coonhound. Back then they were used for fox hunting much more than they are today. The name reflected the similarity that the breed had to the American Foxhound and the English foxhound. While the Redbone and Black and Tan were given separate breed status, all other treeing coonhounds were called English after the turn of the century. These included both the Treeing Walker Coonhound and the Bluetick Coonhound. They were considered all the same breed. It was the variation in color which separated them. The heavily ticked dogs split off from the English and the Bluetick Coonhound was recognized as a separate breed in 1945. In 1946 the tricolored hounds separated into the breed called Treeing Walker Coonhounds. Though redticked dogs predominate, to this day there are still tri-colored and blueticked English hounds. English Coonhounds are energetic, intelligent and active. Their great senses make them excellent hunters. This breed is extremely fast, hot-trailing competitive type coonhounds. Very devoted to its family, it makes a good companion dog. It does well living indoors and plays a fine guardian to his family and home. They are usually best with older considerate children, but can also do well with younger ones. Some can be a bit dog-aggressive and reserved with strangers. Socialize this breed well while still young. Do not let this breed off the leash in an unsafe area, as they may take off after an interesting scent. They have a strong instinct to tree animals. High-strung but loving and eager to please their owners. They have an average life expectancy of 11-12 years.
