Description:
Hans was among a group of dogs that Judy rescued from the SPCA of North Brevard several years ago.  He is a very sweet Lab/Plott Hound mix and has a beautiful brindle coat.  He was adopted from us by a loving family, which grew to include another dog and a new baby.  Since the baby's birth, Hans (now called Jack) became very protective and did not like the other dog being around.  He would do best in a home where he can be the only dog.  Here is what we know about Hans:
  • Leash Manners - Hans can be a lot to handle on leash.  You need a gentle leader or choke/slip chain to keep him close by he will take off ahead of you in an instant.
  • Crate/House Training - He is completely house broken and does not need a crate for any reason.  We can leave him alone all day while we are at work and the house is just the way we left it.
  • Socialization - Hans would benefit from continued socialization with other dogs to work on his social skills.  He can be very overprotective around other dogs.  He loves to chase squirrels and on occasion has caught a possum so he probably would not do well in a home with cats or other animals that may incite his prey drive.
  • Energy Level and Exercise - Hans has a high energy level.  He is described as a "ball of energy" and always in a good mood.  He LOVES squeaking toys but will rip them to shreds to find the squeaker in a matter of minutes.  He loves nylabones and playing tug of war with rope.  He likes some of the Kong toys, but gets bored with them very easily -- so he definitely needs a home with a lot of activity, exercise, and stimulation.
  • Daily Structure and Schedule - Every night he sleeps on our bed and when I leave for work, he usually hops up to my pillow and sleeps next to my husband.  He is a good, clean eater and drinker, we referred to him as the "hoover".
  • Temperament - Hans has an alpha/dominant personality and requires a strong, confident owner who is able to be in control of his behaviors.
  • Obedience Training -
  • Behaviors - He won't really beg for human food, but he will lay close by just in case something drops or if you're not watching he'll try and sneak a bite -- but he won't jump up on counters.  He still jumps up on new people when they come to visit and often barks like crazy when cars and/or trucks are outside our home.
  • Personality Quirks - He is a very loving and sweet dog.  He's a cuddle bug and loves to sit on the couch next to you with his head in your lap.  He also likes fetch but only indoors, as outside he gets too distracted by the birds, squirrels and other noises.
  • Ideal Home - Hans is perfect for an active individual, couple, or family (preferably no small children).  He loves to give kisses and just play!  Jack needs to have a large fenced in yard to run.  He has never shown much interest in young children, in being near them or playing with them so we would not recommend a home with young children.
*** How familiar are you with the Labrador Retriever? According to www.dogbreedinfo.com, the Labrador Retriever is a loving, affectionate, lovable, patient dog. Once known as the "St John's Dogs," the Labrador Retriever is one of the most popular breeds in the United States. Originally from Newfoundland, Canada the Labrador was trained to jump overboard into the icy waters to haul fisherman's nets to shore. Specimens were brought to England in the 1800's by English ships coming from Labrador, where the dog's fine retrieving instincts were honed and developed. One of the best family dogs and canine companions because of their gentle, loving disposition, the highly trainable Labrador also excels in drug detection, as a guide for the blind, and service dog for the disabled. The breed is also an outstanding obedience and field trial competitor. Highly intelligent, loyal, willing, and high-spirited. Lively and good-natured, they love to play, especially in water - for they love to swim. They have an excellent, reliable, temperament and are friendly, superb with children and equable with other dogs. They crave human attention and need to feel as though they are part of the family. Labs are easily trained. These dogs are watchdogs, not guard dogs, although some have been known to guard. They have a life expectancy of 10-12 years.
