Rosa, along with her sibling, Teddy, and mom, Cleo, were surrendered to PRBJ because their family could no longer afford to care for them and they were outgrowing their apartment home. 
  Because of the living situation, all dogs are a little underweight and Rosa is more food assertive.  She will need an owner with guarding behaviors to help her trust that she will be taken care of and that she does not have to guard her food. We are requiring new owners to use an expereinced dog trainer to asist in her rehabilitation. With her guarding and food aggression, Rosa needs to be the only dog in the home and we are recommending an adult only home.

  German Shepherds: Smart and easily trained, the ever-popular German shepherd is quite active and likes to have something to do. Therefore, they need ample daily exercise daily; otherwise, they become mischievous or high-strung. German shepherd dogs get along well with children and other pets if raised with them, but in keeping with their guarding instincts, they tend to be leery of strangers.
  Their defining attribute is character:  loyalty, courage, confidence, the ability to learn command from many tasks, and the willingness to put their life on the line in defense of loved ones.  German Shepherds will be gentle family pets and steadfast guardians.

1/16 staff update: Rosa will need an experienced owner and an experienced trainer. Applicants need to include their trainer's name and phone number when applying. We are not recommending her in a home with other pets or children due to her guarding behaviors.
