11/21/09 Foster Update:
Pharaoh is doing great! He is learning new tricks! Theyre not perfected yet but he can sit, drop, stay, and roll over. Its a work in progress. We are still working on the bathroom situation but he is getting to the point where he barks at the door when he needs to go out now and then so we are trying to expand that! His favorite thing to do is ride in the car. He loves to look out the window. I am continuing to introduce him to new dogs and have had zero problems. He is very sweet and submissive...never agressive. I literally have only heard him bark maybe 10 times in the last month. He loves to play with his new playmates, and he is very interested in little things like lizards and bugs outside. lol. He still is having a problem chewing things up but it is only if I leave him out when I am gone so he is crated. As he doenst chew things while I am home i feel its a nervous separation thing. But I am convinced it will go away once he is out of his puppy/teenage stage. Speaking of, I have yet to find a toy that can out last him. The average life of his toys are 4-7 days. haha. His favorite passtime is sleeping in my bed. I will sometimes find him passed out, curled up there..and at bedtime he likes to go underneath the covers and sleep in the curve behind my knees. He is a very social animal and has to be touching you at all times as a means of security I believe. I can tell he is very loyal and appreciates everything he has now.

11/07/09 Foster Update:
Pharaoh is very clean and doesn't have that "dog smell".  He's thin, short hair, doesnt shed or very minimally.  His activity level is moderate..perfect dog..still a puppy at heart where he likes to play fetch and jump around with his toys but loves to sleep curled up on your lap.  He adapts very well to all situations. Has been on college campus, birthday parties, around other dogs, children, on a boat.  He's extremely friendly, very passive but the only time I've ever heard him bark is when someone is walking down the street at a distance.  He's very good with other dogs..loves to play with them. Never been around cats, great around childeren. Loves kisses. Great with visitors.  He's the sweetest most loving dog I've seen, he HAS to be in contact with his master. If I get off the couch to go to the kitchen he will wake up from his nap to follow you there. When you sit he will sit next to you and lay his head on your lap. If you're laying in bed he will curl up in the small of your back just to be touching you. Or when he gets really affectionate will actually burry his head under your hand so you will pet him.

I try to feed him twice a day..once around 9 and once around 5.  He eats dry food. I've been very careful not to feed him any people food. Will not beg but loves to sit and watch you eat. Will take your food if left unattended for too long but is learning.  I keep him on a good schedule for going out awhile after eating so doesn't exactly let you know when he needs to go but will have accidents if you feed him and leave him out in the house so I crate him when I'm gone and let him out asap when I return and he is very good about that and will run to the front door to go out. He does have some chewing tendencies, I think he gets lonely if left out of his crate at home alone and does chew things so its necessary to have a chew toy for him..no cloth toys, he will tear it apart. He needs a strong chew toy.

This dog should NOT be allowed outside unleased as the breed description says. Is extremely fast and will run away. If he does get out you cannot chase him because he thinks its a game. You need to sit down on the ground and call him in a positive voice or walk the opposite way so he wonders why youre not chasing him. I truely think thats why he was found as a stray because he got out and ran away. But if he has an encosed area he LOVES to run and run. No digging, and almost jumped out of the car when he saw a squirrel.

He knows stay when coming inside and needs to take his leash off, just learning Sit. I can tell this dog is very intelligent and will learn commands easily.  He's a very quick learner. When told of something he shouldnt do he learns immediately. And he responds very well to positive reinforcment. You have to be assertive with this breed. If he senses you are scared he will be also.  I believe this dog was abused because how it cowards away..so the owner needs to be very understanding, loving and patient. He needs as much attention as possible. I feel like this dog has been neglected and appreciates everything you do for him and any human contact and thats why this dog is so loving..he is actually laying on my computer as im typing this because he wants me to pay attention to him. If you treat him well he appreciates everything you do for him and will return the favor with unrestricted affection and love. This dog is still a puppy and has some puppy tendancy but is the calmest dog ive seen at this age. Loves to just lay on the couch and take a nap on your lap while you sit.

The Pharaoh Hound is reasonably independent and a most pleasant companion dog. It is peaceful in the house, loves to play, is calm, loyal, brave and loving. Quiet, naturally well-behaved and intelligent. This breed loves children, but treats strangers with reserve. When the dog is excited, it blushes, with his nose and ears turning a glowing deep rose. The Pharaoh Hound should not be too difficult to train. The handler needs to be understanding of the dog's character and to be consistent in approach. It can do well in competitive obedience. Socialize the Pharaoh well at an early age and as the owner of the dog be sure to stay mentally strong so the dog can feed from your energy to avoid timidity. Nervous humans tend to have nervous dogs because the dog can feel your emotions. Generally good with other dogs, but can be rather dominant toward other male dogs if the owners are not there to communicate to the dog that dominance is an unwanted behavior. This breed is very fast and likes to chase things. A fast hunter, it should not be trusted with rabbits, cats and other small non-canine pets. Don't let this dog off the leash except in a safely contained area. The Pharaoh Hound needs an owner who is calm, displaying a confident, consistent, natural authority over him. The rules must be made clear in such a way that the dog can understand.
