Description:
Keller, who his foster family calls Mango naming him for his unique yellow/orange colored markings.  Mango is blind and deaf.  He is probably able to see some shadows and hear very high or low pitched tones. He is actually able to follow you around (if you don't get too far away).

He has been evaluated by a canine eye specialist and has genetically inherited blindness and deafness.

He is a sweet and affectionate, really a typical puppy in every way. He loves to play with other dogs.  He obviously has a map in his brain of his foster mom's home, because if you saw him walking around, you would hardly know he was blind - we'll post a video soon.

He will need a special home who will be committed to training him. Teena Patel at the University of Doglando is working with his foster mom to develop a training plan for him.  Here is her latest blog entry about Mango...

"Meet Mango. He is a 12 week old mix breed puppy. Mango is available for adoption through Pet Rescue By Judy. While awaiting adoption, Mango is being fostered by Astrid (Lilo and Joy's mum) and trained by Doglando.

It is amazing how "normal" Mango is, if blindness and deafness were not considered handicaps or disabilities. Unlike many of the deaf dogs we have encountered, Mango seems surprisingly calm, cautious, and unbelievably sensible for his age. It has been just short of week since Mango has been with us, and he attends daycare at Doglando three times a week. On his first day at Doglando, he learned the general direction of the door that leads to the outdoors. He became familiar with stairs very quickly; its just amazing to watch him slow down when he thinks he is approaching them.

We had a lot to learn immediately from this little boy. Instead of trying to adjust the environment to better suite him, we had to let him be, and explore to learn the environment. We realized we had better put the water bowl down on the same spot each time after refills, and make certain things part of a routine for him to learn with success.

Mango, like every other puppy, has found a love for rocks and mulch. We can set him down anywhere on Doglando's property, and this young guy knows exactly where to go to find gravel and mulch :)

At home, Mango has found best friends in Lilo. He knows his foster home inside out, and will even go out on his own. He refuses to go potty in his crate (so far), will bark with quite a high pitched sound informing of Astrid of his potty needs. Other than that, he is such a happy boy, and so incredibly smart, amazing and cute.

I am working on having him approved to visit the Magnolia School (a school for the severely physically and mentally handicap and profound children). Last week when I went to tour the school, I met a three year old boy who was also deaf and blind.... we think this may mean a lot to both of them."

This could be our Keller's/Mango's twin - (also named Keller) check out the following website:

It will be very important for Mango to be adopted into a home where someone can spend a lot of time with him and have another dog, who loves other dogs, or be adopted along with another puppy.  As Mango grows he will use his relationship with another dog to be his eyes and ears.

10.31.09 Volunteer Update:  I had the pleasure of meeting Keller today at the Doglando 'Snow Pawty' event.  You would never know that Keller is deaf and blind.  He interacted with all of the other dogs as though he could see and hear everything going on around him.  As you can see he is nudging his buddy, Mali, in the one photo while trying to get her to play!  He appears to be a very happy boy!

*** According to www.dogbreedinfo.com, the Labrador Retriever is a loving, affectionate, lovable, patient dog. Once known as the "St John's Dogs," the Labrador Retriever is one of the most popular breeds in the United States. Originally from Newfoundland, Canada the Labrador was trained to jump overboard into the icy waters to haul fisherman's nets to shore. Specimens were brought to England in the 1800's by English ships coming from Labrador, where the dog's fine retrieving instincts were honed and developed. One of the best family dogs and canine companions because of their gentle, loving disposition, the highly trainable Labrador also excels in drug detection, as a guide for the blind, and service dog for the disabled. The breed is also an outstanding obedience and field trial competitor. Highly intelligent, loyal, willing, and high-spirited. Lively and good-natured, they love to play, especially in water - for they love to swim. They have an excellent, reliable, temperament and are friendly, superb with children and equable with other dogs. They crave human attention and need to feel as though they are part of the family. Labs are easily trained. These dogs are watchdogs, not guard dogs, although some have been known to guard. They have a life expectancy of 10-12 years.
