Description: Dutchess is a beautiful 5 year old Dane that is up to date on all shots, heartworm negative, on preventative, microchipped and ready to find her wonderful forever home. And, no, that isn't a typo - this pretty lady spells her name with a "t." She is a very sweet girl that gets along well with smaller dogs (she was raised with one), but we're not sure about cats. She is good with kids over 4 (she is big and may push a smaller child over). Dutchess is a little shy of larger dogs, (she is after all only about 135 lbs). She gets along with them OK but mostly just ignores them. Dutchess loves her humans, is very calm and LOVES car rides. She will cuddle with you on the sofa but will lay on a soft bed on the floor if she must. If you haven't guessed, Dutchess is an indoor dog. Dutchess came into rescue because her owner (since she was a puppy) had a baby at 40, had other kids and was getting overwhelmed. She told me with tears running down her face that she just could not give Dutchess the attention that she deserved. If you think that you are someone that can give Dutchess that attention please call her foster mom, Kathy at: 407-671-9199 She does home visits and will help you decide if this is the girl for you. As with all our dogs, there is an adoption fee for Dutchess. ***Did you know that, according to www.dogbreedinfo.com, incised on some Greek money dating back to 36 B.C. is the image of a dog very similar to the Great Dane of today? The Great Dane is known as the "Apollo of all dogs." In 407 A.D. German Gaul and part of Italy and Spain were invaded by an Asiatic people (the Alans) who brought with them powerful mastiff-like dogs. In Germany especially, where these magnificent animals capable of overcoming bears and wild boars were much admired, a process of selective breeding was begun. The dogs were crossed with Irish Greyhounds, and the issue was the beautiful, large, thin, agile dog known today as the Great Dane. Despite the fact that they are called Danes in English, these dogs have nothing to do with Denmark. The Great Dane is a gentle giant. Dignified, kind, sweet and affectionate, it is playful and patient with children. It loves everyone and needs to be around people. The Great Dane does not bark much and only becomes aggressive when the circumstances require it. A steady dog, responsible and dependable. Brave and loyal, it is a good watchdog. They need plenty of exercise - at least a good walk a day. The expected life-span is about 10 years, although some live 12-13.
