Haven was found as a stray by a young man. He made all the appropriate phone calls to Animal Control that he found the dog and offered to foster until the owner was found. Below is a write up he made for us regarding Haven. Since being at the center and around other dogs, Haven shown he would prefer to be the only dog in the home. He would be best with older children, due to his size.
I found this little guy on 07/24 on the corner of Newmark (very busy road) and Timbercest Dr. two blocks from my house. He had a ribbon type lead that was about 8 ft long attached to a very tight leather collar. The collar was so tight it had rubbed a sore on his neck, which I've been treating with MicrocynAH and Mupirocin antibiotic.
I went door to door in the area and no one recognized him. I reported him found to animal control. I called 3 veterinarian offices as well as posted on Pawboost Alert, Neighborhood App, and social media (Facebook). He was taken to veterinarian office and checked for microchip, but there was no chip found.
He was starving and dehydrated, and he had very bad diarrhea. I've been giving him rice and rice water (starchy) with plain chicken breast to bind him. I also give him a little bit of Puppy Chow kibble.
He gets along very well with my 2 year old male American Staffordshire/Pitbull Terrier. He is cat reactive. He also has a little bit of toy aggression/resource guarding..he will often drink out of the same water bowl my Pitt is drinking from, at the same time, yet if a toy or treat is between them or near his crate door he will growl and snarl and snap. Once the object is removed, they go back to kissing, licking and playing. He has only been this way with my dog,
not
with me. I dewormed him with rx from vet I'd ended up not needing to use on my own dog, as a 'just in case' since he had such bad diarrhea and was going to be in close quarters with my own dog.
He appears to be housebroken as he will not go potty in his crate, and when I let him out, he knows just what to do by running immediately over to door to go outside to do his business. When walking outside, I can tell he wasn't walked often if at all, because he is still learning how to walk on a leash (he pulls). If he sees a cat/another person/another dog while walking outside on leash he is very reactive and starts growling and barking, and he hasn't really learned to socialize yet.
This boy is very sweet though with me. He's a big kisser and cuddler. He has not snapped or growled at me once, he has a very sweet disposition. He will occasionally cower though if you are reaching towards him, as if he has been hit/abused in the past, but no aggression whatsoever towards me.
The first few days he drank a LOT of water, he was very dehydrated. He takes treats very gently from my hand. I don't know his name, as there was no info on his collar, so I've been calling him “puppy.” He is a very active and hyper puppy, and it seems as though no one paid him any or much attention. He has learned the words, “cookie” and “go outside,” but he doesn't know, “sit” or any of the basic commands yet. He will sometimes howl/bark/whine loudly if left alone,ie I walk out of the room, like he is afraid he's being left again.
