Description:Dixie is an example of why we do what we do. This dear dog was found abandoned, alone, wandering the streets. She was covered in fleas, dirty and scared, but that didn't stop a kind person from having compassion on her and giving her shelter. Fortunately Dixie was found to have a microchip. Unfortunately, her owner claimed they had given her away months ago and no longer wanted her! My heart breaks!!!
8/6: Dixie was adopt about 1 year ago but recently was returned because the family was moving into a small apt. and could not bring her. She is now looking for her forever home again! This is what his previous owner had to say:
Dixie is a beautiful dog both inside and out and is very loving and gentle with everyone she meets. I remember a few times I had to take the food right out of her mouth and NEVER did she growl or pull away. Dixie is very obedient and knows when to be the protector and when everything is okay by the way her master reacts to people. I never had to worry when I left her home that she would gnaw on things or be destructive, the worst thing she did was lay on the couch : ) She loves going for rides in the car and sniffing the air as your driving down the road. Dixie loves treats and does have a bad habit of staring at you when you eat (that is my fault) but she can easily be retrained because she is VERY intelligent.

Her favorite past time is laying on the cool tile on a hot day but come cooler weather Dixie LOVES to be outside running in the backyard. I bought her a few toys but she was never really interested she would rather play in the backyard with you. Dixie is a very laid back dog she gets excited when company comes over but once she has said her hello she will lay down and just enjoy the conversation. I never really had her around other dogs but did find that most of the time she liked being the center of attention but when it came to children she absolutely adored them. The youngest she was ever around was 4 years old and she was very gentle."
But did I mention that good Samaratian? Dixie was bathed, treated with Comfortis for fleas and started on a regimin of antibiotics. She came home with a friend to start the road on her road to recovery. During her time with this wonderful person, Dixie revealed much of her personality. According to Lindsay,
"She loves other dogs but doesn't enjoy feeling over whelmed so slow introduction to new friends is best. We assume that Dixie never recieved proper socialization based on her behavior with other dogs. She would not do well in a home with small dogs or cats because Dixie can be too intrusive into their space. She has been housed for a few days with cats and small dogs and was ok with supervision but lacked proper ettiquette and could lead to injury of herself or others. She is very gentle with the child she has been staying with a four-year-old child. She did well around horses, goats, and chickens. She would do best with someone active who wants Dixe to be a PART of the family instead of being apart from it. She crates well. She would be a good dog for a family or individual. She doesn't chew, doesn't jump on people, doesn't take food off the counters, doesn't jump on furniture. Dixie is house broken, gets along with children, bathes well, is loving and good for vet checks. Overall she is a good dog who deserves a chance."
Won't you consider being Dixie's happy ending?
The Truth About Those Black Tongues from www.chowwelfare.com
Does the black spot on your Labrador's tongue mean he's really a Chow mix? That mixed breed puppy in the shelter with a partially black tongue -- is that a sure sign he's part Chow? The answer to both questions is: No! The Chow Chow's blue-black tongue is one of the breed's most well known physical characteristics. It's also the most misunderstood.
The Chow is one of the most ancient breeds and is the ancestor of many breeds of today. The orgin of the Chow's black tongue is a mystery; we don't know how or why he came to have it.
We do know that the Chow is not the only breed with a blue-black tongue. The Chinese Shar-Pei shares this trait as well. A few other animals have black tongues, too: the giraffe, polar bear, and several breeds of cattle including the Jersey. We also know that blue-black spots o
