Description: Don't you just adore this puppy? We think he is a Shepherd mix. Mixed with what, we are not sure, but are guessing a lab. He is a little shy, but so so sweet and ready to go home! He will make a wonderful pet and will love you to death!
Foster Update 3/30 Howie is a super smart puppy. He doesn't chew on anything except his toys and he's already housebroken!! I've only had him for 3 days and he already asks to go outside! He's very mellow for a puppy but knows when its time to play. He plays very well with other dogs and absolutely loves rawhide bones! He's a wonderful companion; he follows me everywhere, yet he's incredibly good about going in his crate when its time. He sleeps like a baby at night, never woken me up! He's the perfect puppy.
Foster Update 03/31: Howie especially loved squeaky toys. He loves them soo much he breaks the squeaker in a day, and is thoroughly upset when his toy won’t squeak anymore. He removed the squeaker from his toy and showed it to me, as if to say “please fix this for me.” Howie also enjoys the outdoors and his walks. He’s gotten so good at asking to go out potty that he decided to ask to go out all the time. He gets so excited when he gets to say hello to people. And boy is he a sniffer! He sniffs everything along the way. He even likes watching TV! He’s a total goof ball!
***According to dogbreedinfo.com, in April 1899, Capt. Max von Stephanitz registered a dog named Horan as the first Deutsche Schäferhunde, which means German Shepherd Dog in English. Known for their tremendous loyalty and courage, they are calmly confident, but not hostile. This breed needs his people and should not be left isolated for long periods of time. They only bark when it is necessary.
Serious and almost human in his intelligence, they have a high learning ability. The breed is so intelligent and learns so readily that it has been used as a sheepdog, guard dog, in police work, as a guide for the blind, in search and rescue service, and in the military. The German Shepherd also excels in many other dog activities including schutzhund, tracking, obedience, agility, flyball, and ring sport. His fine nose can sniff out drugs and intruders, and can alert handlers to the presence of underground mines in time to avoid detonation, or gas leaks in a pipes buried 15 feet underground.
A quick daily brushing is best unless hair in the house is not a problem. They should be bathed rarely, only once or twice a year to avoid skin oil depletion. Shepherds have a life expectancy around 13 years.
