Description: Gorgeous, isn't he? Region is a young, handsome Great Dane. He was rescued and is fostered by Kathy and Wes, our Great Dane experts. Here is what Kathy has to say about him:
"Region is a beautiful 1 1/2 year old Great Dane. He's only about 110 now but should go 125/130 when filled out. He was very skinny, 95 lbs, when we first took him in. He LOVES his food. Region can be very shy when first meeting someone but warms up fairly quickly and is quite affectionate. He is still recovering from being neutered so won't be ready for adoption for awhile yet. I believe Reeg got very little training while younger. I'm working on not jumping up, house breaking, mouthing and will be working on walking on lead as soon as his kennel cough clears up a little more.
I would not recommend he go to a home with very young children due to his exuberance. He is a VERY happy dog, loves his toys and other dogs, male, female, large and small. There again, due to his size and energy I would advise against very small dogs. Not sure about cats. He seems to be smart and is learning his lessons well. If anyone has any questions about him, they are welcome to call me at 407-671-9199."
2/11 Foster Update: Region appears to be good w/cats. We had one walk by us yesterday and he had NO reaction. He walks VERY well on leash.
We will require a home visit for anyone interested in adopting Region. Great Dane experience is desirable. Before you make an emotional decision, please realize that the expenses of owning a Great Dane are more than double those of your average dog. You have to give them a double dose of flea prevention, heartworm prevention, food (double at least!),..... Make sure you can afford Region before you apply for him. Thanks!
*** According to dogbreedinfo.com, the history of Great Danes go way back. Incised on some Greek money dating back to 36 B.C. is the image of a dog very similar to the Great Dane of today. The Great Dane is known as the "Apollo of all dogs." In 407 A.D. German Gaul and part of Italy and Spain were invaded by an Asiatic people (the Alans) who brought with them powerful mastiff-like dogs. In Germany especially, where these magnificent animals capable of overcoming bears and wild boars were much admired, a process of selective breeding was begun. The dogs were crossed with Irish Greyhounds, and the issue was the beautiful, large, thin, agile dog known today as the Great Dane. Despite the fact that they are called Danes in English, these dogs have nothing to do with Denmark. The Great Dane is a gentle giant. Dignified, kind, sweet and affectionate, it is playful and patient with children. It loves everyone and needs to be around people. The Great Dane does not bark much and only becomes aggressive when the circumstances require it. A steady dog, responsible and dependable. Brave and loyal, it is a good watchdog. They need plenty of exercise - at least a good walk a day. The expected life-span is about 10 years, although some live 12-13.
