Description: My heart is aching as I write this. It is just a couple of days after Thanksgiving and I am still suffering from that "Oh, I ate too much again" feeling that I get on an annual basis. And I open an e-mail from Amanda. In it is a brief description and photos of KK. My eyes fill with tears. How did this happen? How did this poor dog come to be in this sad state? How I wish I had never seen such a thing before, but in the 21 months that I have volunteered with Judy, I've seen it far too many times. Shadow the German Shepherd. Massey the Bulldog. Mona the Boxer. Broadwalk Bowler the Bulldog. Time and time again we rescue these dog that are starved to the brink of death, eaten up with fleas, covered with cuts and gashes. And every time they look at us with hope in their eyes, gently wagging their tails with their last bit of strength. They are God's little miracles, surviving so much abuse, too often administered at the hand of people, yet so forgiving, so willing to love again..... KK was found out in the country by Kevin and Karen of the Red Lion Pub. They spotted her, emaciated, wandering near their home. Even with the help of left-over steaks from the night before, it took three hours to lure her to them. This sweet, incredibly loving dog was easily 20 pounds underweight, covered in cuts, barely able to walk. Judy bathed her numerous times to get the fleas off, clean out the wounds, soothe her soul. I know she will recover from her ordeal and we'll find her a loving home. KK will be another life saved thanks to those who support Judy's efforts to save the abandoned pets of central Florida. Thank you!
12/2 Foster Update: I took her to the vet yesterday and she only weighs 29 pounds. I brought her home and got her to eat a little last night which I was thrilled about. Despite her pathetic condition, she has a sweet, loving disposition. She curled up on the couch with my kids and even gave them kisses. We’re going to work hard to get her healthy but the happy thing she seems to have already on her own. She has slept a lot but when she wakes up, she looks up at us and wags her tail (of which my daughter counted every bone).
12/8 Foster Update: KK is doing really well. She is quite the little eater and is making up for lost time quickly. She has put on a couple pounds already and is enjoying her special liver, rice & green bean concoction that Michelle B. sent me the recipe for. She eats every 3-4 hours and the bowl is empty in record time. She has beautiful bright eyes and wags her tail constantly. She hasn’t had any more accidents in the house and is quick to tell me if she needs to go out. She loves to give kisses and wiggles her whole body when she’s happy. She’s learning (slowly) that cats are not treats- but we are making progress. Although not as fast as my cats would prefer! She is a sweet little thing that loves to curl up on her bed or the couch and snuggle with you. She likes rides in the car and taking little walks. She’s very good on a leash after the initial pulling to “go somewhere”. She’s a wonderful dog and full of spunk. She is going to make a great recovery!
12/12 Foster Update: I took KK to check her weight today and she is 40 pounds!!!!!! She’s gained 11 pounds in 11 days. That tells you how starved she was. She still has a ways to go but she has just come so far in such a short time. She is the sweetest thing too. Full of love and kisses. She loves to be outside and lay in the sunshine on warm days. When I tell her we’re going on a car ride, she runs out and waits by the car door. She’s such a good girl.
12/18 foster update: KK has discovered that playing ball is fun! Yesterday she chased a tennis ball all over the floor, watching it bounce around her with her tail going ninety miles a minute. Today she actually learned to play fetch! She would run after the ball and bring it right back. She'd give it back very gently and look up to wait for me to throw it again. It is great to see her happy and playing like a dog should!
