First, let us say that we are happy that you are interested in rescuing an animal. Please understand that our primary focus is to rescue animals in distress and assure that they are never put in that position again, therefore we do not have a first come, first serve mentality. Instead, we make every effort to ensure that we match the right family with the right dog. We will attempt to be totally honest with you about your pet of interest and, in return, ask that you be totally honest with us about your situation. Are you sure you are ready to adopt? We encourage you to take a quiz to see if you are.
Before you contact us about any animal, please complete the Cat Adoption Application or a Dog Adoption Application so that we can have some preliminary information. There is space at the end for any questions. After we receive your form, we will contact you to answer your questions, discuss your compatability and hopefully set up a meeting with your future pet!
Not all of our pets attend all the events, so if you are interested in a particular pet, we recommend that you complete the online adoption form so that we can arrange a meeting.
Generally, minimum adoption donations range from $150-$450 for dogs and $125-$350 for cats; this includes the cost of spaying/neutering, shots, microchipping, and medical care.
If you are a senior citizen, you may qualify for our Seniors For Seniors Program. We only accept cash, money orders, checks, VISA and Mastercard.
I can't believe it actually requires an explanation, but we are occassionally asked why we have a minimum adoption donation, since these are abandoned pets that "no one wants." Oh good, I see that you are shocked by the question! Me too, but I'll pause for a moment to explain to those who don't get it.
We are a non-profit rescue that saves in excess of 1,000 pets every year. There are costs associated with that. Although many vets give a discount, they cannot be expected to provide their services for free. Therefore, we are billed for spaying/neutering, annual shots, and treatment of pre-existing conditions. With cats, those costs average $123. With dogs, it is even more. And this is before anyone has eaten, used a litter box, turned on the air conditioning, used gas to go to an adoption event,...you get the idea. And then there are the pets that need heartworm treatment, surgery, or some other unusual expense. You see, Judy has a reputation for taking the pets that have these issues. She sees past the initial expense and instead focuses on the family that the pet will love and become a very special part of one day.
Are you beginning to see why we have the minimum adoption donation? Often the donation doesn't cover the expense of a particular animal. Sometimes we are able to make up the difference when an animal passes through our rescue briefly and doesn't incur any expenses at all -- pets that are up-to-date on their vet records and fostered by their original owners until matched with a new family. These little guys are a real blessing to us ~ we are able to use their adoption donation and apply it to the needs of other rescued animals. Even with that, we have to rely on additional donations from the public to make ends meet. I hope that makes sense to you. I'm sure many of you can't believe I had to actually explain it. Our adoption hours are 12:00noon to 5:00pm, seven days a week at our Sanford Adoption Center, 12:00p - 5:00p Saturday and Sunday at our Oviedo Marketplace Adoption Center and 11:00am to 4:00pm on Saturdays at our Colonial Mall Petco adoption events. Check out our Events Calendar to verify additional times and locations.
We limit our adoptions to the Central Florida area. This is due in part to our return policy. If at any time in the pet's life you are unable to keep it, you are required to return it to us. If the pet is returned within two weeks of adoption, the fee will be refunded minus an administrative fee. Of course, it is our desire that each adoption be successful the first time, therefore, please be completely honest with us and we will be honest with you. And, as always, thank you for considering adopting a rescued pet!
