About Chanel | |
|
|
• Appearance Chanel is a beautiful Papillion, (sometimes called a Continental Toy Spaniel), lap dog with large oversized beautiful ears, that rotate to pick up every sound like two radar dishes. She is covered in beautiful soft black fur with some tan coloring on her chest and paws. She is a small delicate dog and weighs about 6 1/2 pounds. Some think she may also be part Chihuahua, but the ears really tell you she is more Papillion than anything else.
• Energy Level Chanel is content with spending most of her day lying beside me on a soft pillow or rolled up towel but is eager to play at times or run outside.
• Food Chanel is fed about 1/4 can of Natures Domain canned food in the morning and about 1/2 cup of Natures Domain dry food for dinner. Natures Domain is a top grade premium dog food available at Costco at discount prices. Chanel is not a fast eater and is not aggressive or protective of her food. She sometimes comes to the table and sits with my other dogs waiting for a handout as she has figured out that sometimes a small bit of people food may come her way if she is patient. She does not bark or whine or make a pest of herself but sits quietly.
• Adaptability Chanel adapts quickly to new situations and is very quick to learn. She learned the doggy door the first day here. The past weekend I took her camping and she found a place to sleep without disturbing any one. During our walks she does her business quickly, and is the first dog that I have ever taken camping, that finds her way back to the correct motorhome and stands on the step waiting for me to open the door.
• Behaviors Chanel has never had any destructive behaviors; she does not seem to be interested in chewing anything. I even offer a steak bone and chew sticks and she has no interest in them. She minds her own business when walking and is not interested in barking at other dogs or chasing the squirrels.
• Human Social Skills If you could say Chanel has any difficulties, it is that she is working thru, learning to trust humans again. She was found in an abandoned home and we don’t really know why she was so fearful of people, but she learned quickly to trust me and want to be with me. She is becoming more and more trusting to others as time goes on. While camping she met many other dogs, and never had a problem, she usually showed distrust to strangers until I reminded her that it’s OK and be nice, she would allow strangers to pet her after a minute or two, after a few more minutes she would actually come back to the stranger for another pat on the head or ear scratch. So she is a very sweet and lovable dog but does take a few minutes to figure out you’re not someone wanting to hurt her. It seems as time goes on she is quicker all the time at accepting new people.
• Animal Social Skills Chanel gets along with other dogs well and shows no fear if they are calm. She will try to avoid them if they are very excitable and jumping around or she thinks that they are aggressive towards her. She is tiny and knows it and will not provoke a fight, and wishes to stay clear to avoid being hurt with rough play. My two dogs are much larger but know not to play rough with Chanel and only with each other so everyone gets along fine.
• Obedience Chanel knows her name and will come with called. She knows the commands to go outside and get in the house and starting to learn sit and down. Most of the time you don’t need to tell her to sit or lay down she always seems to know what you want and does not need to be told. She knows Come Here and NO means to leave things alone. When riding in the car she sits in the seat and does not make a fuss and just lies down and sleeps until you arrive at your destination. She never needs to be crated but willing to sleep in her crate at night without a fuss. She is crate-trained and housetrained and pretty much leash trained.
• Training She is walking well on the leash and most of the time stays with you. If you stop walking she knows to stop but sometimes like to take a short lead when walking. Chanel learned quickly that at night she is to sleep in her crate and runs there to wait for a small treat after going outside for the last time before bedtime. While camping I did not crate her and she slept quietly on a pillow placed on a seat, all night and was quiet. She seems to understand to stay where you place her until she needs to go outside or needs to get up for water or some other reason.
• Personality Quirks Chanel is a very lovable and sweet dog but takes a short amount of time to warm up to strangers. She loves people that she has spent any time with and has learned that they are not going to hurt her. She is very alert and will let you know if there is a strange noise outside that you may not have heard. Outstanding watch dog but not big enough to be a guard dog.
• Ideal Home I believe she would do well in any home where someone is there most of the time, as she loves human companionship, but does not have young children that may be too young to understand how delicate this tiny dog is. I would say other pets are fine as long as they were gentile and did not play rough and injure Chanel. A large dog could injure Chanel with rough play without meaning to, so any other animal in the house would have to be small or at least well behaved and very gentile.
