Foster Update: 10/09/14
I'm going to cry like a baby when Fagan goes to his furever home. This pup just melts your heart! First, in case you can't tell from his photos, he is made of 150% cuteness! Second, his personality will have you dropping to your knees, rubbing his soft, floppy ears & kissing the cutest little brown spot you've ever seen on the top of his head. He's doing much better with not chewing on things. I've given him tons of very durable toys and he munches on those. He is doing so much better with not being scared if I walk by with something in my hands. I think he'd be a good fit for a family with older kids that aren't making loud noises. He's also skittish of large men but with some sweet talking he'll warm up. He doesn't jump. He would absolutely LOVE to cuddle up with you every night and sleep in the human bed. He loves to steal clothing & if he's in a really mischievous mood he'll try to take your pants or socks as you're putting them on. With that, he's learning "release" very quickly. You should probably always have the camera on and ready because he does some funny stuff. He doesn't have a mean bone in his body. He currently stays in a gated off part of my house and is going great with the extra room. He loves to walk and be outside. It doesn't matter how long the walk is, he'll try to convince you that ya'll should stay outside. His beagle appetite has kicked in & loves to eat! He plays great with his foster brother.  It's hard to explain how amazing Fagan is and I understand why he is a volunteer favorite.

Foster Update: 10/17/14

I heard Fagan speak for the first time this week. We were on our evening walk & he was busy tracking and I guess we got to "the spot" and he went beagle crazy. He howled and was trying really hard to go through the bushes! It was really quite cute. I've only heard him speak one other time. He's a very quite dog. He walks pretty well on a leash but he definitely needs some training on that. We're working on walking nice on a leash, "sit" and "release".  He's gotten much better with walking nicely on a leash this week. I switched him to a thin chain collar for walking and he responds a lot better.
He has an obsession with tags. If there is a tag on anything, he'll rip it off (pillows, bed spreads, dog beds, etc). He's doing a LOT better with not being nervous. I left him out in the house while I was outside for about an hour and he did great. He loves to say his evening prayers. All I have to do is say "Fagan, let's say our prayers" and he'll come trotting over to me and Deacon and we all pray. Of course, we always pray that his furever family will feel the pull for him. He will need a family that will take time and have patience with him. A quiet house is a necessity and a dog friend would be a big bonus. He's not a "bad" dog but he is mischievous and VERY skittish. Someone that has had a beagle would be a plus since if you've had one you know they're a special breed. He's an absolute love bug. I can't explain how special this pup is and how much I'll miss him when he goes to his forever home. At the same time, I'll be delighted.

Fagan is a staff and volunteer favorite!!  I asked one of the shelter staff about him, and he told Fagan is just "awesome!!!"  He is sweet and playful and just an all around, great dog.  Also, Fagan is very quiet for a Hound; in fact, he has never been heard barking.

According to www.dogbreedinfo.com, the Beagle is one of the most popular scent hounds because of his energy, willingness, and merry, sweet disposition. The breed probably originated as a cross between the Harrier and other hounds in England. The Beagle has been used in packs, alone, and in pairs, for hunting hare, pheasant and quail. He has also served as an excellent narcotics detection dog and makes a fine family companion. The Beagle is a gentle, sweet, lively and curious dog that just loves everyone! A happy little tail-wagger! Sociable, brave and intelligent. Calm and loving. Excellent with children and generally good with other dogs, but should not be trusted with non-canine pets, unless they are socialized with cats and other household animals when they are young. Beagles have minds of their own. They are determined and watchful and require patient, firm training. This breed doesn't like being left alone. Consider buying two if you will be gone a lot. A Beagle has a loud baying cry that was a delight to hunting horsemen, but can be disturbing to family and neighbors. Beagles have a tendency to follow their own noses. They may take off on their own exploration if let off their leash in an unfenced area. Energetic and possessing great stamina, the Beagle needs plenty of exercise, but a yard of reasonable size will take care of most of its requirements. A brisk daily walk will cover the rest. Always use a lead when walking this breed or you will be running the risk of it disappearing in search of wild game. They have a life expectancy of about 12-15 years.
