Foster Update 9/16:

• Appearance: Tan with white accents.

• Energy Level: High energy level, she plays well with young/active dogs.

• Food: 1/4 cup of food twice a day, Taste of the Wild grain free.

Adaptability: Initially, she is nervous around new situations and people, and it takes time for her to be comfy with new places and people. Like many dogs, Trace likes to “come to you,” rather than new folks coming up to her. Quick movements scare her as she is a small dog.

• Behaviors: Toy and bed aggression, doesn't think she ever had to share with others. This is typical of a small dog who was not shown the behaviors within a pack order.

• Human Social Skills: Trace seems afraid of men, but yet, she loves her foster daddy! so, let's just say, she needs time to warm up to new males.  She is hesitant around new people at first, but if given time and space, she warms up to them.

• Animal Social Skills: Plays with other dogs, but definitely is used to being the dominant dog of the home, toys, or beds.

• Obedience: Trace did not have any obedience training when she came to us, so we are working on it~

• Training: She will use pee pads if necessary, and is able to wait long periods of time to go outside.

• Personality: When Trace warms up to you she can be a super-sweet, playful girl~ She has a huge personality and is a loving dog that needs a calm, patient home.

• Ideal Home: Her ideal home would be a quiet home, where the new family is patient and understands small dogs may be nervous and skittish with new situations and people. Trace would be happiest if her people were most of the day.  A retired person or couple would be ideal!  Her new family should continue to slowly introduce her to new surroundings and people to acclimate her to new situations. Also, Trace would prefer to be the only dog in the home and have all the attention from her people.  Continued socialization at dog parks and walks is recommended so she can improve on her social skills.

Once she warms up, Trace is the most loving dog and will curl up in your lap and nap away. She is a typical Chi and can be slow to warm up to new folks, but she offers much affection for an owner willing to be patient and allow her to show her personality.  Trace is a lot of love in a little package!

According to www.dogbreedinfo.com, the Chihuahua is the oldest breed on the American continent and the smallest breed in the world. Native to Mexico, nonetheless it seems to have been introduced by the Chinese. It was only brought to Europe at the end of the nineteenth century. The Chihuahua is named after the Mexican state of Chihuahua where he was brought to the rest of the world by travelers. This breed is believed to have been sacred to the Pre-Columbian Indian nations. The Chihuahua is a popular, economical companion dog. Courageous, extremely lively, proud and enterprising, it gives and demands affection. Bold and saucy, it moves swiftly to avoid being stepped on. Chihuahua's are strong-willed, intensely loyal and become very attached to their owners, even to the point of jealousy. They like to lick their owner's faces. It is undeniably suspicious of people except for its owner. When strangers are present, it follows its owner's every move, keeping as close as possible. This breed may snap at teasing children, after all it is too tiny to get away. The Chihuahua must resort to his sharp teeth in self defense. It is not recommended for children. He can be noisy and may require patience to housebreak. Many owners simply paper train this breed. The Chihuahua hates the cold and may shiver, although this may be due to high metabolism as much as temperature or anxiety. It will tolerate and even appreciate a warm sweater on cooler days. They are good little dogs for apartment life. Although it is tempting to carry these dainty creatures about, they will keep fitter if taken for walks. A body harness is safer than a collar. Don't think that just because he is small he should be confined to a small space. Chihuahuas have a life expectancy of 15 or more years.
